No travelocity fee if you book directly on www.aa.com

save $5

It's $290 with taxes.

Why Philly and Charlotte only?

The usual airline marketing ploy. Those are the cities that US Air serves to San Jose. Evidently US Air has a bigger market share than AA so they are going after market share. Once they achieve parity or dominance they will raise the fare.

Delta's base price out of Charlotte is $224 which connects through Atlanta. It's $455 base price out of Atlanta.. You can fly out of Charlotte for under $300 but have to pay over $500 to fly the shorter distance from Atlanta. WTH???

Airline pricing structure/strategy is extremely complex. It was once explained to me but I don't remember it.

I just booked out of Philly for the $224 plus tax price for May 23rd to 31st.

I live in suburban Maryland outside of DC and will just make the 2 1/2 hour drive.

I'm temporarily in the Miami area now and can't believe it's cheaper to fly out of Philly....

If they lower the price for the DC/Baltimore area, I'll try for a Labor Day weekend flight also.....

the low prices out of Philly and Charlotte are apparently only good for travel until mid June.

Don't know how long these current offers will last....seemed to be lots of empty seat choices when I reserved my seats for the flights.

the flights transfer in Miami both ways

I could drive from Atlanta to Charlotte and fly for $290 total on AA. The problem is it cost what, $.35 a mile to drive($175ish) and I'd have to pay parking plus the time involved is probably about 7 hours there and back... It's probably just as cost-effective to pay the Delta rip-offs the extra money.. It really sucks that Delta will let someone on in Charlotte at around $325 but make someone that gets on in Atlanta pay over $600.

CAD,
Thanks for the links. I'm sure it helps guys out a lot, especially the lazy ones who don't want to look themselves.

I thought about taking the Philly flight for $224+taxes. I'd save about $200 versus flying out of NY. I can take a bus to Philly RT for $34 and taxis from bus to airport and back. Driving isn't worth it at all; gas, tolls, parking adds up to the same price. But it's 2 hours each way to Philly, too far away to save a net of $100.

Besides, I'm expecting the fare to drop into the 400 range on the non-stop TACA for May.

I think you're right about the fares dropping, at least temporarily, at individual airports.....

I just check on a daily basis, if possible, and jump on the cheap fares when they pop up...

for instance, October last, there were some cheap fares for a few days out of BWI to SJO and I used them for my January trip.....$275 total....some of the other local members like Redman also took advantage for the short window of cheap fares and booked also.

My goal is too spend all of next winter in San Jose from say November to March...in the meantime, I couldn/t resist the Memorial Day Weekend fare offer of $290...and, I still want to make the Labor Day bash
