Extra 14 hrs. divided by 300.00 = 21.43/hr. you'd hypothetically "earn" by sitting in the airport. Personally my time is valuable and I'd prefer to spend that 14 hrs. doing something I enjoy- whether it be work OR play. I'd get my ass to SJO as quick as possible.

Time is money unless you are retired.

I have to pay at least 600 to get to CR, but I arrive in CR on my first day off work.

10:30PM flt from SFO to ATL then ATL to SJO - I'm in SJO around 1PM which is better than after 8PM. The good thing is that I can leave SFO after a day at work and I get 1 leg of my trip over with on the overnight trip to ATL (nearly impossible to get to SJO without a stop from SF Bay Area).

I take sleeping pills on the way to SJO so I can more easily sleep on the planes and so when I arrive in SJO I don't need sleep.

Becareful here!! You should also take a baby aspirin to help stop any blood clots from forming while you put your self to sleep in these akward postions on the plane!

Well, I can spend $300 more and have a shorter layover... I gain a few more hours in SJO but I lose $300... or, lose the extra hours but have more cash to spend... I figure to be there a week, so time isn't a real killer ...

what would YOU do?

For me the savings would not be $300.00. I would get so bored sitting at an airport for 13 hours I would have to find other things to do. Maybe hop a cab into downtown catch a movie and grab a nice meal in a restaurant and cab back to the airport.

If I stayed at the airport would need at least 2 ridiculously overpriced bad food meals and few hours at an airport bar where I would pay an outrageous price for 1oz drinks.

Either way it would reduce my airfare savings substantially.

Thanks Zippy - I will do this. I can't really sleep on a plane unless I have a sleeping aid. I'd drink a beer, but more likely to get a headache so I reframe.

It is amazing to me the price discrepancies over my 5 trips in '05. Paid as little as 320 and as high as 600.

If you get lucky and search around enough, especially late at night, after 3 AM Eastern. You can find the great deals.....As such my Feb trip is only costing me $ 397.00 RT on US Air

Other good thing of leaving out of Chicago is the fact that I get to SJ by 1:30 in the afternoon and do not leave until 3:30 in the afternoon...do not lose a day on either side, the only better is TACA out of Chicago. Arrives SJO at 10 AM (3 days a week) leaves out of SJO at 6 PM (ususally do the Saturday to Sunday).

Look around, you can get lucky.......the site I use most often

www.sidestep.com

just my dos colones.........

If only my airfare prices went up $200. I would book them without a flinch. Try Toronto to SJO in March return $1,384. plus TAXES using internet travel sites. You don't want to know what travel agencies are charging.

Regular rate is $700.00 . And thats in Canadian dollars eehhh :D

MR

What web site are you using ? I put in March 15 to 22 on one and March 10 to 13 on another and came up with 1 stop flights fron Toronto to SJO through Miami or Atlanta for 717 to 785.

Do not know how far you are from Buffalo, but the flight prices for the same dates are around 570

check out this web site

www.sidestep.com

Hope this helps.......

This is just a suggestion for you guys stuck in the Great White North.

Check into a discounter (ie. AirTran) to ATL then take Delta direct from ATL to SJO.

You might also find something going from MIA (American) to SJO. Delta
has two flights a day to SJO, 10:45 AM and 6:20 PM. They also fly to Liberia.

You can often find flights listed on the individual airline sites that don't show up on the agency sites (ie. Travelocity, Orbitz, Expedia) and vice versa.

Also set up a free account on Travelocity to send you an email alert when the fares reach a level you are comfortable in paying.

Thanks for the suggestions. I currently hunt on;
- travelocity.ca
- redtag.com
- itravel2000.com
- airtransat.ca
- aircanada.ca

There are only 2 carriers out of Toronto (YYZ), air canada & air transat.
Other charters have gone belly-up a few years ago when air canada declared chapter 11 for awhile. Toronto now is the worlds most expensive landing fees for a jumbo jet. $13,000 Cdn which beats out
Hong Kong airport. Way to go Toronto!

Try aircanada.com depart YYZ to SJO on march 13 return march 20 non-stop.... PLUS add another $250.00 in taxes then add 20% exchange rate.

I found a fare of $467 (including taxes) on Hotwire. Taca (non-stop) is asking for $606 right now, but that'll surely drop as we get out of the high season.

A few catches, they don't tell you the airline (not a big deal) and it's 0-1 stops (could be an issue with a long layover god knows where). I'm not interested in a 12-hour journey. You don't know the flight times either, so I could get in 8am or 8pm.

You find out all the details after you book and pay. I'll probably pass.

I used them before. I ended up getting some overnight layover in Miami.
