I stayed at the Castillo from March 1-5, 2018. My bill was presented at checkout as follows:
4 nights in Penthouse 1 (Zoo) @ $189/night all-inclusive + 13% tax = $854.28
I signed my debit card receipt in that amount and headed to the airport.
I saw my bank statement today, and was surprised that I was actually billed $937.16
I sent an email to La Amistad/Castillo inquiring about the extra $82.88 I was charged...I will let you know if I hear back from them and how it turns out.
FYI I had no bar tab or any outstanding room charges or anything like that.
Just to add to Matt's answer above, bank credit card fees in Costa Rica are insane. 10% (roughly) on top of the charged amounts. This is why I pay cash as much as possible.
We have a big sign at our Lodge about this and often get similar complaints (our charges are usually smaller as people prepay their trip and usually by wire, in which case they ate the fee already).
CR makes the typical US 3% credit card fees look like a bargain. This is why Ticos pay bank account to bank account for almost everything they can (like in Europe, but not the US).
In the US those would be wire transfers and cost $45, in CR the fee is negligible and credit card fees are high.
CR is an (relatively) expensive country. The most expensive in Central America.
