I'm headed to SJ next Friday for a week. I want to get a phone so I can call Uber from wherever I am, so I'll need a data plan and GPS.

I'd use my normal phone, but I have an iPhone 6 plus, and the SIM card is non standard, so I can't just pick up a sim card at the airport and pop it in. Also don't want to be walking around at night with an expensive looking phone.

Any suggestions? I don't need a top of the line phone, I just need a good enough smart phone to run the Uber app and let me use a CR sim card; and a prepaid plan with enough data to let me call Uber say once a night.

Any suggestions?

On Amazon you can buy BLU smartphones cheap enough. They run on android and are unlocked. I believe they are chinese made but most get pretty decent reviews, enough to use as a burner phone I am sure. There are several models, but the link below is for a $48 model. They offer bigger and better, but the prices increase.

http://www.amazon.com/BLU-Advance-5-0-Unlocked-Smartphone/dp/B018IZ0SWI?ie=UTF8&keywords=blu%20smartphone&qid=1462935946&ref_=sr_1_1&s=wireless&sr=1-1

One of the specific questions in the listing asked if it works in CR and someone replied that they go to CR three times a year and get a sim from Kobi in the luggage claim area and it works fine.

That's what I did. Current phone is a BLU Vivo XL (all the chicas ask me for it). I got a Kolbi SIM from costaricacellularconnection.com but they no longer sell SIMs, they just rent phones now.

Does OOOBER pay you each time you say its name?

You can pick up a non-standard SIM card for your Iphone at the airport. You are not the first person to have an Iphone. But like you said, not a good idea to be walking around SJ with an Iphone in the open, day or night.

It's easy, buy an unlocked GSM phone that works on the 900/1800 Mhz bands. Any quadband phone will work. For 1 week, I would load about ยข3,000 ($6) for the week if you don't plan to call home using airtime. If you plan to call back to the US, it costs about 200 colones per minute, so calculate how much you'll need. Also, if you run low, you can recharge at many places downtown.

I have bought a few BLU phones for my friends in Colombia. I have had a few problems, but overall, they work well. Recently, I have bought XGODY. They are a little cheaper than BLU, and seem to work well. Here's an ebay link for a XGODY: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Quad-Core-Andro ... DooL438n8Q . That seller ships Priority Mail, and I receive it in Florida three days after I order. I ordered Sunday, and received it today.
Both BLU and XGODY work in Costa Rica and Colombia.
