I presume an "overnight guest" applies to TLN - bringing the breakfast ticket into the equation? If so, I'd think shorter guest visits do not incur the charge?

Yes, if you check-in a guest for overnight stay, they will charge you $10. They assume that your "guest" will want to eat breakfast and that is why they charge it. The breakfast is better than the typical rolls with butter you get at many hotels.
