It will be interesting to see what kind of fare I can get from Las to Sjo and back on Southwest. I have taken United 3 times and have had no issues with the flight! The overnight flight from Las Vegas works great for me I work that day get a little rest and head to the airport. I try to monitor the fares on United and booked my fight in October for $358 round trip! Never have seen it that low before. If the Southwest and United are comparable I may just stick with United

Only problem is right now you have to book from IAH Houston to get to San Jose. They will not let the computer assign a fair from Las Vegas yet. The price I got from Houston was right about what you pay from Vegas on United. I did just have my flight times changed for my flight on United in October but that was going from SFO to Houston that changed. I was able to call in and get a much better flight by talking to an agent and letting them know the time change did not work for me so the booked me on a shorter trip time and earlier flight.

I don't see anything on United for the entire month of October out of IAH UNDER $670.00. Where you guys getting these prices?

Last year I booked 2 flights DFW-IAH-SJO on United and one price was $417 and the other was $480. I checked the prices often and most of the time they were in the $800s and the cheaper prices would only last a few hours. This year I am flying IAH-SJO and paying $700. The $670 flt is for 6am departure from SJO. I also checked IAH-SJO on Southwest (which starts Oct 13) and the price for tuesday thru monday(the week of halloween) is $295.00RT w/taxes so I think United knows it only has a few more months before the monopoly ends.

I booked my fight in April. I know it is way in advance. I had planned on coming to Costa Rica in October anyhow. I have the United app on my phone and about 15 minutes before the end of work I just happened to put in my travel dates and was shocked when I saw the price! I booked it right at work! The $358 fare lasted for about 3 days, since it has been in the 530-580 range! If you are willing to check their site often I seen the price drop back to 370 a couple of times, but only for a day or so than it goes right back up!

I think Southwest is going after United's monopoly on flights going south out of Houston. A couple of years ago someone published an article showing where 90% of the flights going south out of Houston were on United and that Houston customers were paying 30%-40% more for flights going south than people flying out of the rest of the country. It doesn't make a lot of sense to charge more for a flight from Houston to San Jose than for a flight from Chicago, New York, or Washington DC to San Jose going thru Houston.

SW first flt Oct 20, only one flt a day, AUS-IAH-SJO, $414.93
UA, several flts a day, AUS-IAH-SJO, $432.93

The SW flt out of IAH arrives 10:30 pm, flt back leaves SJO 9:00 am
UA has several flts both ways. You may find the schedule better than SW.

Beginning in Oct SWA will be charging $297 for RT Hobby to SJO.
However the flight availability and times are not too great.
Last week I booked UA at $295 for RT IAH to SJO for Halloween weekend.
Much better availability with 9 am departures although 6:30 am return flight no fun to catch.
Keep shopping UA for October Nov and Dec flights. You will find some bargains, esp from IAH.

One thing to remember about SW on arrival. I think it's 10pm so hotel arrival after 11. A little late so you might be limited on options for food and putas but it can still be done.

When will you be in Costa Rica Jms? I will be at the Cocal Oct 21-26! Noticed you are from Las Vegas also! I also got my flight on United! I booked mine way in advance but hope that the presence of Southwest will keep United fare down!

I'll be Flying out of Vegas on October 30, coming back November 9. Going to try Southwest. $470 round trip. Best I could find on United was 580 although my first trip in May I was able to score for $500. The arrival and depart times aren't as good as United. Due in at 10:30 pm and leaves 9 am. But add $50 bucks to the United price for checked bags too, so comes out to about $150 difference. Plus United was delayed 4 hours on my way there and 3 hours on the way back due to mechanical issues

New Southwest sale until Thursday. Just found roundtrip from Vegas for $333...Yes $333. So...thankfully I can change my flight without any penalty and I just saved myself almost $170 bucks. That puts a price from Houston to San Jose at $295 round trip...Only 38 more from Vegas!! WOW.
