I have flown on Spirit 26 times, counting one time as from origin to destination, in the past 4 years plus three weeks. The last time was last week. I have not experienced what you describe. I have never paid extra for a seat, and almost every flight I have had either an aisle or window seat in the front half of the cabin. A few times I have had an exit row seat. I don't go to Medellin to enjoy the flight. As long as I get to where I am going close to the scheduled time, and am subjected to minimal discomforts, I am okay. My happiness occurs between the flights.

John, you are as entitled to your opinion as he is to his - I hate a lot about Spirit, but will fly them if they offer the best fare (sometimes they do - sometimes not - especially if you factor in a carryon, as well as a seat - I'd rather undergo root canal than sit in a middle "pre reclined" Spirit seat on a crowded flight - so a seat pre assigned is a must for me) But overall my philosophy towards them is closer to yours

And for the record, while I don't keep track, its over 12 times, both internationally and domestically.
And for all the talk of Legacy carriers - Spirit never cancelled a flight on me but AA did the day I was flying out - could not get there until the following day - does this mean I'll never fly American again - of course not
One of the best experiences I have ever had on flights to Costa Rica has been on Lacsa?/Groupo Taca - better seats, more legroom, professional service - I'm not a big drinker, so free drinks are unimportant to me, as is a meal .
The problem I've encountered is they are not price competitive - over the last few years, they have been $200 - 300 r/t more than Spirit, or JetBlue. Going 2-4 times a year, that adds up. (Plus I don't like Taca's schedule from MIA to SJO)
Now we come to JetBlue - I like this airline a lot - I'll take the position that before I overreact or get pissed at something we have zero details about - I'll wait and see what they actually do and how it impacts fares.
