Of course I believe you Santas Bro and thanks for the warning on Taca and Lasca. I was just posting the link in case it could help anyone with other United partners, someone had recently asked about Star Alliance award booking.

Santas Bro

TACA doesn't want you on their airline, Greg won't let you stay at the Mansion.
Maybe they are trying to tell you something.

I love Avianca Lifemiles. You can find flights to Colombia from NY for as low as 12,500 miles each way.. No penalties for redeeming last minute. If you don't have enough points, you can use pay 40% in points and buy the rest at ~$15/1000 miles. A steal from the usual $30/1000 miles!

They are also part of the Star Alliance, but redemption sucks.. They start at 35,000 miles each way.

I am not saying that United Airlines (former Continental) is great, but I have redeemed miles the last 10 years to fly to South America a couple of times a year and I got good deals. I have also used AA, but personally I like Continental a little better. I hope that UA doesn't complicate things :)

For 7,500 miles (15,000 RT) travel within Central America is one of the great values for mileage redemption. As you know RT SJO to Managua or Panama is often close to $500
