Sportsmans Lodge mansion wing is the best if you can afford it. I have stayed in the Morazon and do they still have key safes? A combination safe is the only way to go.

Just because its a combination safe, its not alway secure.

Morazon safe? I had just left their casino....this was back in around 2006. I got attacked by two men dressed up as women and a driver of a car. It was about 30 feet of the entrance on the ave central entrance to the hotel. He came up and grabbed me from behind and went into my back pocket. Fortunately, I did not lose a lot of my dinero since I kept most of it in my shoe. I had a small billy club in my pants and after I backed heeled his knee I was able to break the grip and then knocked the shit out of the second one's head that was trying to grab me. They then ran to the car parked at the curb.

Get this. There were bystanders on the street but no one came to offer assistance. Don't expect help from the locals....most do not want to get involved.

It's sad that CR has so much crime. When I traveled there in the 70's - 80's I could walk anywhere alone in the gulch at midnight to 2am and never have a problem. Be careful out there. Walk with friends and keep an eye out.

Agreed, my point exactly. This is a rookie asking for the SAFEST hotel, not the cheapest. If he and his crowd come down here and have their fun running around all over during the daytime then recuse themselves to the Del Rey at night in search of love, they don't have to find themselves fending off these types of attacks.

Even if no threat of this nature comes upon them, guaranteed they still will be hassled by thugs and beggars on that lonely dark stroll as they are trying to focus on the ho walking with them. For a few bucks more, stay in the center of the action, have a blast and minimize your risk of getting your ass beat and your wallet lifted as part of your vacation experience...

If you're an old pro on a budget or frugal by nature and are experienced in maneuvering these streets, by all means, the Morazon is an option, but enduring the hassle and danger of night time movement and staying in a dreary boring place is not a good choice for a rookie looking for the experience of a wild and crazy exciting vacation that gives him the greatest probability of returning home in one piece.

I 've read stories about chicas going thru your belongings to get the key but have yet to hear about a chica opening a combination safe.

It's not the chica I'm worrying about, its the hotel employees, the maid, the handyman, etc. who could get a copy of a master key or knows the master overiding combination code to the room safe.

Rookies and those who have traveled little.

If available, check in you cash with the casino or hotel desk and surely get a receipt. I've had only a few problems with the room safe but they do exist. With today's tech thieves a room safe can be read but the chances are minimal. Just to scare you a bit further, room safes have actually been stolen from rooms and if there is not a security alarm....you are shit out of luck.

In this modern age, I have no trust in SJ or any other country.

Also, if you are a gambler and are winning at the casino....beware...there are eyes on you and they may be waiting later outside the casino to rob you. Check your chips at the cage with a receipt and come back during the early daytime to retrieve your cash. Besides, normally the casino will think you are a returning patron and will treat you better. Not all, but they should respect return gamblers.

Going back to yesteryear. In the 1960's to 1980's there use to be so many storefront casinos in SJ....in bars, cafes and even food places. The owner would come over and deal you blackjack. It was fun but you definitely had to watch their deck dealing. Also, how much booze they wanted to give you fee. Never had a problem except for the Holiday Inn.

Again, these were the days that I could walk alone in the gulch at 2 or 3am in the morning.

I miss those days. But times change...maybe for the worse.

Just be careful out there.
