Just did a trial pack with my carry-on bag, and it looks like I'm screwed either way. The bag weighed in at 35 lbs., well within the 40 lb. limit on American for carry-ons, but not even close to Taca's 22 lb. limit.

So now it's decision time - either go ahead and have the bag checked as packed, or take less stuff. I'm the type that likes to have as much with me as possible on trips, no it's not going to be easy.

What I did was just remove enough weight and place it into a shopping bag ( books,computer, dvd, etc) . Just re-insert after leaving the counter.

On flights within Chile, Lan Chile has the same weight rules for carry on bags and a limit on checked bags . This can be an expensive pain if your travel agent, ticket source or tour organizer fails to tell you this.
They also have a required $100 visa fee upon arrival for Americans (USA), as has the USA for them. No departure tax however.
