An amigo heard about the Talamanca Hotel on Ave 2, Calle 8 y 10, and asked me about it.

Does anybody have any intel about the place? I don't know anything about it except, generally, where it is located.

Thanks in advance.

Never stayed there, but had several excellent meals at the restuarant on the top floor.

Not very good reviews on Tripadvisor.

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review ... _Jose.html

Notice they are ranked 65 out of 78 San Jose hotels.

Following up on your post, ID:

Seems lately there have been some posts about random hotels never discussed - don't know why guys don't realize that there is probably a reason these hotels are never mentioned on CRT  (To say nothing of not being sponsors - if a property wants our type of business, they are either a sponsor, or are talked about - in some cases, a lot (2 in particular come to mind   :P  )

Generally, they fall into being geographically undesirable or "guest unfriendly" or both.

Not saying that you can't look for a hotel outside the gulch, or find a gem that is never posted about, but you stand a far better chance of sticking with the Hotel Little Havana, Dunn Inn, La Amestad, Sportsmans, Morazon, Freebird, HDR, and I've likely missed some vs some of these "out of the blue" places there have been posts about of late.

Also seems like the questions are from new guys w/ little to no CR experience, which might be the reason for the questions in the first place

Scuba........

I agree with what you say about us mongers and the mongering venues. I am a HUGE fan of Boyd and HLH. My request for intel on the Talamanca involves a request from an amigo regarding a "family trip" for him.

I hear you :) - don't you think you might have included that info in your post :?:  :?: Otherwise guys are going to reply with info concerning location (or lack  ) and guest policy.

Well, you got some info from ID - does not look highly rated; personally, if I were on a family trip, absent some really compeling reason, I would not stay in San Jose. Why do they want to stay in SJ? Plenty of better locations for a family trip.

If I did, I might stay at the Grano del Oro hotel, beautiful, good res't. Or if I wanted to be in the general area, I would stay in Escazu (Pico Blanco in San Antionio de Escazu) - see how the info comes when you provide a just a little info   :P

Thanks, Scuba.........

What would you say about any decent, but inexpensive, hotels in Cartago ?

"Decent" and "inexpensive" don't often go together, but sometimes they do. For the price of the question, it seems worthwhile to ask.

Cartago does not do it for me any more than taking my family and staying in San Jose Neither are tourist hubs; c'mon, you know better  ) -

Is your friend really that clueless about where to stay - whats going to be your next destination - Punteranas (sorry, another thread going on with a group ofof genius' planing on renting a house there; one of the wives found it - Jesus, give me strength  :P   )

I gave you 2 suggestions; one in San Jose and one in San Antonio de Escazu - they would be far better staying on the Pacific coast, or Monteverde, or somewhere outside of San Jose or Cartago. (or Punteranas  )

Yeah, the majority of the regular tourists who do stay in San Jose just use the city as a waystation on their way to/from the real place they're going (usually an eco-lodge or coast resort) and only stay for a night or two. Most of the boutique hotels serve that market. Just about every Costa Rica guidebook says the same thing: don't waste any more time than necessary in San Jose.

True Tom :)

And "other considerations" aside, anyone coming to Costa Rica for a family vacation would be better served staying elsewhere. Just not Punteranas or Cartago

Where I'm (gently) busting chops a little here is guys are asking questions, and leaving out real important info - c'mon, how tough is it type that extra line and include all the relevent info - can't speak for others, but I skipped school the day they taught mindreading    :P
