The Hotel Santo Thomas has a great deal going on Orbitz, good reveiws and looks to be loacted right in the middle of things (near the HDR and BM etc). Anyone have any experience? I was looking for something other then a straight monger hotel, with a pool etc for some down time between ticas, so this joint looked good. Any thoughts?? (ave 7th street 3 and 5 Barrio Amon)

Not really a monger hotel, but bringing girls there is OK if you are discreet. Lots of ecotourists. The rooms are nice.

$15 chica fee. They will not even let chica into the public area without paying. You are limited to one girl. I wanted to go out on patio to have a couple of drinks with a couple of girls and they refused. That really sucked and I let them know it. Yes it is nice hotel, but when girls run a two for one special it really crimps your style. I had to go to love motel for $14.00 . Saved money in long run. I had used my airmiles to pay for my room so my only out of pocket expense was chica fees.

With all due respect - and I am sure you are correct on the points you made about this hotel - most hotels (the Presidente being a notable exception  ) will tell you their policies about guests, smoking et al (example - one hotel that gets positive mention and is a sponsor - Freebird - bans cigars - non starter for me; no big deal for others - but I would be pissed if I did not know their policy in advance).

I've spokent to guys who used their Marriott points, then complain about policies and distance from the gulch - simple solution - ask; "know before you go" and never assume anything, especially when a policy could go against you.

They are unlikely to to change their policies because a guest objects, but these are the questions you really should have asked before you checked in - the other point is there is a reason certain hotels get mentioned, and others don't.

I actually think your post was great, b/c it gave real recent intel - but this is what you should have known in advance - and using miles - I get it, but if using the miles to stay at a place that frustrated me - well, let me say life is short.

Oh, and Cappodui - 2 points

Its not easy to find a hotel that serves 2 masters - if you don't mind paying a $30 guest fee, the Sleep Inn could work for you, as well as some others

"Tica" means Costa Rican female, not another word for prostitute - you have a lot of reading and learning ahead of you my friend :)

It must be emphasized that the Santo Tomas is NOT a monger hotel, but a higher-end boutique place that mainly caters to the family and ecotourist crowd, and even though it does allow chica "guests" for a $15 fee, it's not the SL, so act accordingly. It has been mentioned earlier as a possible backup place when all the usual monger haunts are filled up, and it can be useful that way, but no way should it be the typical monger's first choice.
