Spirit has a $328 fare from NYC to SJO for the months of April-May.

Are these all the fees they charge (besides food/drinks)?

Seat fee? How much?
Carry-on $30?
Checked bag $33?

Are these fees per segment if you are connecting or are they for the whole trip. Their website says that you can choose different seats for different segments.

Do they have online check-in? Do you still have to wait in line if you check-in online and have a suitcase?

Link to Spirit seat policies:

http://www.spirit.com/Policiesseating.aspx

You can pre-pay from the time of booking to 1 hour before flight $10 - $40 per segment. 24 hours before flight, select random free seat or prepay.

Checked....$73.00 for 2 and a 40 lb limit.

Spirit's advanced seat selection fee covers only a single leg of an itinerary. In other words, if you fly from LGA to MDE (with connection in FLL), you pay separate seat fees for the LGA - FLL and FLL - MDE legs. The carry-on and checked baggage fees are good for the entire one-way itinerary. $9 Club members get a discount on all fees. Baggage fees are also dependent on the number of bags and whether the itinerary is domestic or international. Paying on-line will also get you a discount. If you arrive early enough at the airport, you may be able to persuade the counter agent to give you a non-middle seat. I was lucky last month when I arrived at ACY 3 hours before my flight. I managed to get a window seat in an exit row without paying an extra cent.

You can print on-line boarding passes for domestic flights, but not for all international flights (eg Colombia).

If you check in online for a spirit flight you are forced to pay in advance for a seat assignment. But this is unnecesary. I have never paid in advance for a seat assignment and with maybe 1 or 2 exceptions have always been able to get an aisle or window or BF seat at the airport after flying them over 50 times. There are kiosks at LGA for you to use to checkin, assign yourself a seat (free) and print your boarding pass. Often if the BFS is available you can pay for it there with a credit card.

Baggage is an issue that you really can't get around, you are gonna have to pay something. I would recommend you get their Free Spirit Mastercard which is free for the first year and gives you free inclusion in their 9 dollar fare club (saves 59.95). That will at least reduce the cost of checking a bag to $20.00 if you do it online in advance. Carry-on charges are even pricier so it really makes little sense to carry on luggage with spirit. If you can stuff everything you need into a backpack you can usually get away with delegating it as your "personal item" if it fits under the seat. They are not as strict at LGA about this than at FLL in my experience.

Also take note that Spirit reduced their weight limit to 40 pounds for checked luggage from 50 before charging extra...

This is the webpage for $9 Club: https://www.spiritair.com/StaticFareClu ... ture=en-US (don't worry about the security certificate error).

Last month, I paid $20 for a carry-on from MDE - ACY when I booked it on-line as a $9 Club member.

I would appreciate some insight from the veteran Spirit flyers:

I did my first Spirit itinerary last month. My account was not credited with mileage for the inbound and outbound ACY - FLL portions of my flights, but the FLL - MDE legs were. I only received a little more than half of the miles I thought I was entitled to. I requested credit using the web form, but received a message stating I was "outside the window for this request." I'm probably not going to be a frequent flyer of Spirit, but miles are miles. :|
