Hey y'all,
Newbie here. I'm planning on being in CR next month, Aug 16-23, and was planning on booking a room at El Presidente. My question is, do I book a room at El Presidente for the duration of my trip or should I mix it up and stay at SL and/or Hotel Del Rey? I was just in Ireland and hated changing hotels everyday, I want to relax and enjoy my vacation.

What is the "gultch"?

I am excited about my first trip to CR.

Thanks in advance.

The "Gulch" is the area of San Jose around the Presidente and Del Rey hotels. It is called Gringo Gulch because of all the tourists in the general area. There are no signs that actually call it that though.

If you are going to CR in August, you should call a hotel immediately. They generally fill up a month ahead of time. There are cancellations all the time though, you just have to time it right.

As far as which hotel you should get, I can't tell you what you want. I hate the Del Rey and would never stay there, but there are others who love the place. To each his own.

Being this late in the game, I would suggest getting a reservation wherever you can. If you don't like it, you might be able to find something else once you get there.

My first trip to CR was in August '03 and we stayed at the Delrey. Looking back on it, we definitely made the right decision as first timers. Since this will be your first trip, I'd recommend the Delrey. I was asking the same exact question on similar message boards before our trip two years ago and I'm glad that we followed the advice of seasoned vets. Trust me, you'll have a blast, and The Presidente is just like 2 blocks away anyway. After your initial trip, you'll have a much better idea of where you might want to and not want to stay the next time you head down there. I'll be heading to the Delrey on 8/25 with the same group of friends I traveled with in '03.

Remember a $10.00 chica fee at the delrey. Presidente and SL no chica charge. Presidente is 2 minute walk to DelRey. Presidente 1 chica at a time. SL as many as you can cram in a room. IE GetRythym

I have stayed at them all and I like the Presidente. They have the new Spa Suites which are awesome. Its 90 a night and they have a Jacuzzi tub in the room which seats two. Do not change hotels you lose about 5 hours in between.

On another note, I am going to Dublin next month and wondered if you have any mongoring tips for me?

Thanks,

You will not be relaxing but you will be enjoying your vacation. Staying in or near the gulch, no time for sleep or relaxing. Oh yea if you call that twenty minute nap with one eye open sleep then you may get some sleep!

Although over the years I have grown to loathe the DR (not the chicas) still I believe you owe it to yourself, as has been stated many times here, to stay once in the "belly of the beast"

However as Grey Ghost said: "Staying in or near the gulch, no time for sleeping or relaxing"

A word of warning however; DO NOT let them swipe your credit card more than once

Enjoy your first foray and really read this board thoroughly before you go. And oh yeah the VIP card really does pay for itself immediamente.

Pax,
Sluthog
