My last of five trips to CR was in December 2007. I’ve finally gotten to the point where I can’t stand not looking forward to a trip to CR. As luck would have it (good luck or bad luck…I’m not sure), my ex-wife recently asked me to help her plan a trip for her and her parents to CR and to help them get around. I agreed to help. My ex did accompany me to CR once, and we peeked in on NF (former) ZB, and we stayed at the HDR. People might think it is weird that I’d travel with the ex, but she’s a good supporter of the hobby, and she and her folks are willing to off-set the cost of my trip.

Anyway….In the past I stayed at the Presidente, Hemmingway, HDR, ZB suites, Castillo, SL,Villa Tournon, and Castillo. The problem I have is that I want to stay at a hotel that generally focuses on mongers without giving that obvious outward appearance…so as not to upset the folks. They will likely be staying at the Presidente, so I want to find a place nearby. I’d prefer something in the $50/night range and would be paying in cash. I’ll probably stay 10 nights.

Any suggestions for a veteran who has been out of touch?

Good to see many of the old, dependable names on CRT after my 2-year absence.

Thanks in advance.

I recommend Dunn Inn or La Amistad.

Thanks. Is LaAmistad the place that was undergoing extensive renovation in Dec 2007? I was going to stay there but they didn't have internet service at the time and the place was a madhouse of construction activity. It did look like it was going to be nice. I ended up walking over the the Hemingway and stayed there instead. I didn't much care for the cold showers at the Hemingway.

You're never going to go wrong picking SL. Check to see what available rooms they have. Great atmosphere and some of the best wingman you can hope for 8)

Yup, that was the one and has been finished for a quite a while now, looks real good. Lots of mongers there but without the HDR/SL look and vibe. A queen bed room for a week or more is $51.75 ($69-25% CRT discount) before 13% tax.

A standard room at the newly remodeled Dunn Inn (BKTuna is running things there now, it now has a CRT discount) is $50 including tax. I'm looking for the same thing as you are, and that price is very appealing.

Cujo, you may have missed the part about not being obvious as a monger hotel.

I just got back from my stay at LaAmistad. The wireless internet is very slow on the 3rd floor but if you have an ethernet cord, you should be fine. Comfortable beds, friendly staff and has the feel you are looking for. I think it is a deal for the money.

Or if you don't have a cord ask for one at the front desk, they will loan you one for free.
