Holas,

One thing that continues to interest me as I read the posts daily is that the taxi drivers apparently don't know their way to the various places. It would seem that since these guys make a living driving gringos all over town that they would instantly know how to get to a particular bar, mp, or strip club.

Is it because they are simply not very bright or that they are pretending not to know in order to jack up the taxi fare ?

One additional question, if a particular location is located on calle 7 @ 7 A and you want to go to calle 7 on 14 A that would be 7 blocks. Does the taxi driver recognise that as 700 meters ? Of if you knew that the place you wanted to visit was on the corner of Calle 4 at Ave 4 would that be sufficient to tell the driver that intersection ?

Gracias,

Ye Old Man

Old Man,

Not sure you are familiar with San Jose's map.

If you are going from Avenida 7 to Avenida 14 that will be exactly 11 blocks; not 7 blocks as you mentioned.

Hotel Presidente is located at Avenida 0. Avenidas 1, 3, 5, and 7 are located north of the hotel. Avenidas 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14 are located south.

I will say that both scenarios apply.

If your driver can count, I am pretty sure he will be able to take you there.

Unfortunately a lot of the taxistas can not locate address from the C & A address. For awhile had to go to Calle 5, Avenida 1 from Sabana Oeste twice a week. At least 50% of the cab drivers could not find that location without me directing them

Can taxi drivers be rented by the hour? Suppose I wanted to make a couple of stops and a 30 minute stop at a MP (while the drive waits) could I just pay them for the hour of driving?

Hey, not finding a massage parlor or an obscure place is one thing. But last month, I had a driver who couldn't find the Bestwestern Irazu. I was f**king with him hard. Asked him how you can drive and not know this hotel. I think sometimes they get drunk and ask the brother in law to drive for the night.

You need to remember that as the streets and avenues of SJ are rarely marked so using street addresses may not be a very efficient way of giving directions.
It works better to use the established directions for the business, a phone call will usaully get them..
I frequently ask for a known location close to where I want to go and walk the rest.
Sometimes drivers from outlying communities will try to work SJ and often they don't have a clue.

HERBF. I have hired car and driver a couple of times. Having finished my morning coffee I have walked to the front counter of the Pres and asked for a car and driver ( who spoke at least some english). Both times I paid $10.00 US per Hour For both. They say they have a Inner city rate and and outer city rate. BUT GIVE ME A BREAK. What difference does it make where the hour is spent driveing around. Its between you and the driver to work out the cost and the details before you get into the car and start your trip. I ended up buying drinks and lunch for my driver( as he was honest and informative) He even helped with translation with the neighbors. At one point of my first trip he turned to me and said " Me NUNCA AQUI"; I never here before". My first trip I spent in the mountains south of the city. I just told him to keep going UP. What ever road was going UP we took. Ended at a dirt track, 4x4 only. When you looked back over the city WHAT A VIEW; even higher then Valle Azul. Saw some very interesting realestate. And let me say the weather was fine. Good luck. I still have a couple of names and numbers.
