Is there a bus to Grecia and if so where would I find it? If I have to be in Grecia by 10:00 a.m. what time should I leave?

Maybe also better off taking a taxi. If anybody has a guess as to how much that might cost let me know. Thx.

There is bus service to Grecia. The stop is in Barrio Mexico north of Coca Cola. Sorry do not have any clearer directions then that. It takes between 75 to 90 minutes depending on traffic,

Check with your hotel front desk if they have more precise info or if they have a cab that can take you to the bus station. A cab to Grecia will most likely be very costly. You did not say what time you will be returning. If it is at night the area where the bus station is is dangerous. Be very careful.

I checked my trusty bus station map. Buses for Grecia and Sarchi leave the station at Calle 2 between Avenidas 1 & 3. I would try to catch a bus around 7 - 7:30 am to make sure you arrive on time. I'm guessing a taxi to Grecia from SJ will run you around C 25,000 one way.

Am I the only one who thought this thread was going to go in a totally different direction?

I guess it being in the Hotels section should have tipped me off

Kickstand, I have no idea what you were thinking or whether anyone else was thinking the same thing, whatever that was, but it all seemed pretty straightforward to me since this is the Hotels, Resorts, Accomodations & Transportation! section.

Blue Devil, I'm not saying your "trusty bus station map" is wrong but my sources have a slightly different location about 8 blocks west of the one you gave. The location you gave, Calle 2 between Aves. 1 y 3, is in right in front of the main post office and while there may be a bus stop there, I certainly don't remember any bus station. I rely primarily on http://www.thebusschedule.com/cr/index.php for my bus research (and I highly recommend anyone else regularly using buses in CR or elsewhere in CA bookmark it). According to them the "Transp. Grecia San Jose" company terminal is located on Calle 18 between Aves. 5 y 7 (costado oeste Abonos Agro). Here is a link to their map. Their phone number is 2258-2004 in case you want to call and confirm that.

ID, that site also lists the transit time as only 1 hour though I'm sure you're right that it might take somewhat more than that IF the traffic is particularly bad.

The departure schedule listed on that site shows service running from 5:35AM to 10:10PM with buses leaving every 30 minutes (at 5 and 35 minutes past the hour). Based on that one could leave as late as 8:35AM bus and make it to Grecia by 10AM but that wouldn't leave a lot of safety margin for unseen delays. OTOH, I would think the 8:05AM bus should provide more than enough leeway. I'm also guessing that, traveling in that direction at that time of day, one could probably just show up shortly before that departure time and find plenty of empty seats, but if you want to play it even safer you should either go to the station the day before to purchase your ticket or else plan to arrive at the terminal that morning about another 30 minutes or so before your desired departure time. Even so, this is a little later than the time that BlueDevil suggested, yet still allows for nearly an hour safety margin.

BTW, the bus info on costa-rica-guide.com, www.anywherecostarica.com and the ever-popular official ICT website all match the info from the site I use.

Finally, one last website that anyone who travels regularly by bus in CR might want to bookmark is the www.aresep.go.cr website, which has spreadsheets with the latest official regulated bus fares updated regularly (though I doubt any of the CR busfares are going to be a major concern for anyone here, let alone the current 770 fare for SJ>Grecia).

Jeez, Prolijo, you are so right... and I stand corrected. You've won yourself a free trip to the DR next time you are in town. :D

A few years back, a member posted this map (or a link to it) of the bus stations in SJ: http://tinypic.com/r/25k2c5w/6 . It's kind of hard to make out on tinypic, but if you zoom in, you will note that all the bus stations are numbered in green (1 thru 21) and city landmarks are numbered in black (1 thru 19). When I opened the map file last night, the black "3" seemed green to my failing eyes. This particular "3", is in fact, the post office. When I spotted it, the location seemed counter intuitive to me, because I thought that busses headed north left from the vicinity of Coca-Cola like ID said. With good intentions, I posted this misinformation without doing a sanity check. The other #3 (the 'real' green one) on the map is the station for the Grecia/Sarchi busses... just as you described. Even though the 11 x 17 map I printed out a few years back has served me well, I appreciate the links to more updated mapping technology. :D

Sorry for any confusion, BT... it was an honest mistake on my part. That's why I prefer to do my own research. If I end up in the wrong place, I have no one to blame, but myself.
