Matt, I have stayed at your hotel during the renovation. Outside of it being noisy at that time I enjoyed an excellent stay. When I called your hotel to reserve a room for my upcomming visit, the gentleman who answered the phone told me that $69.00 was the least expensive room you have and that was the CRT rate. Your post indicates the the rate is $58 with CRT discount. At that rate I would choose your hotel over any hotel in San Jose. Maybe the person who quoted me the $69.00 rate was not aware of the discount.

Anyway, I will call again and try to get as room for my trip. Thank you for responding to my inquiry and no I was not drunk at the time I wrote it.

Wow, the Costa Rician economy must be doing very well. Hotel Amistad has increased their rates from $50.00 to $69.00. They have no bar, no casino and no pretty women. I guess they want to compete with the Sportmen (has a bar and women and has a $69.00 rate) and the Del Rey (has a bar, casino and women, rate is a little higher but not much). Guess I will be looking for a new place to stay in San Jose.

Have you stayed with us or are you assuming we are not worth the value? We have not been $50 for over two years. We do offer specials and do offer 25% off weekly stays for the rack rate which puts a queen room around $52 and a king room around $60 before tax for a weekly stay. We did increase prices in 2009 on penthouses and jacuzzi rooms and left the prices alone on King and Queen rooms. We also have three rooms starting at $65 for the conservative guest. We did not change our discount policy for 2009. You can still get a room for $50 - you just have to stay a week :D. You are right we do not have women soliciting in the Hotel (there are plenty of places around for that). We are a different style of hotel than the Sportsmen and hope he is full everyday. It is good for our business. We are nothing like the Del Rey nor have made the claim. We have put in over a million dollars in remodelation, so if you have not stayed with us for over a year it is a different class of Hotel now. We have put in a bar and restaurant and are awaiting final approval. We hope you come by and see the changes we have made. We value the business.

Matt

Sorry Matt but not true.

I stayed with you in early November of '07, slightly over a year ago. For 6 days you charged me $32.50 per day (which included my CRT discount) for a standard room.

I stayed with you again in late January of '08 and you charged me $37.50 per night for a 4 night stay including 1 night free for a prior misunderstanding (and thanks again).

I also stayed with you this past September for $69-25% discount off-season ?) for 5 days, $52.50 per day. But I paid that because I (perhaps for t wanted to stay in the same hotel as my buddy who took one of your penthouses.

I, and I guess many others(?), go to Costa Rica for an INEXPENSIVE alternative to hobbying here in the states. Granted, being out of the country in a different culture is part of the lure but the low prices are the draw for some/many/most(?) of us.

Having said that, you run a class operation and the new rooms are all very nice and you and your staff are very courteous and professional

The chicas in the del Rey have been complaining about the lack of business at least since last September (and of course on my 2 trips since) and have lowered their prices accordingly. There have been some terrific bargains there in the last 4 months or so.

And now, with the recession getting worse by the day, costs are going UP. Not good, at least not for ME. :(

I think I know where the hotel is, but could someone be a bit more precise? Is it within walking distance of HDR?
I am getting tired of hearing all dis rigamarole  (am dat a woid?) about La Amistad, so if it is indeed close to the chicas I am cancelling my reservations at the SleepInn and going to Matt's establishment. :D
The ONLY phucking reason I stay there is the proximity to da poosie. Never particularly cared for it, especially after my last escapade. Piss-poor management.

Look it up on the VIP map, right side - top of the map. Only 1 block away from SL, 3 blocks from NF and within walking distance of HDR during the day. Take a taxi at night. No chica fees, good management, come down for breakfast and join the rest of the mongers trading their escapades.

La Amistad is no comparison to SL or DR.

I stayed at SL on two different occasions and was bothered by noisy environment, especially around courtyard/bar. On second occasion I got the worse possible room (now that I know, I would advise you to ensure to get a room farthest from courtyard/bar area), so checked out promptly after one night and moved to La Amistad instead at same rack rate but higher CRT discount.

And it was sooooo much better ...
Newly upgraded rooms and everything, free hot breakfast, quiet, chica friendly and close to all the action. What else you can ask for?

Is it true that you are not allowed to take more than 1 girl to Amistad? Do you need to pay a fee for a second or third chica? Not that I am a stud but reading the posts god only knows what can happen in CR. :)

No one has mentioned the maids washing your laundry for a small propina every day. Very nice asset.

Visitied last weekend.

Novia lost her cell phone & we needed to contact ICE. Stopped off at the SL & ordered dinner. My cell was in the room (El Presidente) so we asked the girl at the bar where there was a phone to call ICE. She said only one was available at the front desk.

My gal went first & explained. She came back saying they would not allow her to use it. I suspected they thought she was a puta - she speaks zero English - so I walked up front & told the gal the full story. Was again told NO! in no uncertain words.

Went back to the bar & cancelled our dinner order. We normally spend 2-4 nights at the SL every time I visit. This was my 7th trip this year. 12 last year & 10 the year before. I gave up on trying to get a room because I usually make my plans only a week or so in advance, depending upon my work load.

I remembered from his board that Asta had moved to the Amistad, so we walked the block. ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEM!!. And feel free to call your mom in San Ramon as well! Well, obviously we had dinner there instead (excellent corvina) and drank well into the night. Returned the next two nights as well.

Will I go back to the SL? Maybe if there's something happening like a another CRT party. Will I stay there again? Not very likely. Will we visit the Amistad again? Per my novia, likely for dinner 2 - 4 times per visit (will be returning in late August). Although we're happy with El Presidente, Amistad is now our back-up choice & a primary choice for dinner & drinks.

BTW - the other staff was excellent & offered much support to my little friend as well. In addition, it appears there is a growing number of expat regulars now visitng the Amistad every night as well.

Just my thoughts; no offense intended. If you see Alberto @ the SL tell him we'll be at the Amistad instead...

/Dan D.

Too bad you had a bad experience. Next time in any sticky situation I would seek out Bill and apprise him of your situation. He's a great guy who puts customer service first and will always help defuse any predicament concerning his staff or establishment.

Cujo
