Continental Airlines® has made the decision to end its participation in the SkyTeam® alliance on October 24, 2009. As a result, after this date, SkyMiles® members will be unable to:
-Earn miles with the SkyMiles program for travel on Continental
-Earn miles towards Medallion® status on Continental
-Enjoy elite and lounge privileges on Continental

Do you happen to know if Copa is switching over with Continental or will they stay with SkyTeam

Good question since Continental's OnePass is also Copa’s frequent flyer program. I couldn't find any info on the site. http://www.skyteam.com/

For a recent trip, flying Copa, to MDE from SJO, I tried to use Skyteam miles I had earned flying Delta with no luck.

Continental said it should work but Delta nor Copa could get the ticket to work in their computer. They keep telling me that Copa is a skyteam partner but my date of travel was the problem. So I had them check EVERY date for the next year until they both told me, "It must not be possible."

Personally I'm going to miss NWA more than Delta. However I'm looking forward to Continental's new Alliance with United and the Star Alliance.

I always liked continental. With them leaving skyteam, I have tons of miles with skyteam and oneworld. Very little with united. My options gets kind of limited now with skyteam unless i want to cnnect in the east coast. US Airways via phoenix becomes my best option now if i switch programs.

2 months ago I booked a flight to use up all of my Continental miles. For 42000 miles I got the following:
Atlanta-Houston-Panama-Cartagena (bad all day flight)
For the return I have a Copa from Cartagena, then a weekend stay in Panama and direct Delta flight back to Atlanta. Nice!!!!!! :lol:

Being an elite Continental guy I'm really gonna miss being affiliated with Delta because of Delta's Rio flights. Delta goes directly to Rio without that damn stopover in S.P. coming & going that Cont. makes. That stop cuts 3 hours out of my trip on both ends.

Plus I liked using my miles for 1st class seats to Rio & Delta would put them out many months in advance while Cont. always held them all back & released a few here & there as the flights got real close, making it impossible to plan something way in advance.

Dat zei de voormalige topman van KLM woensdag (1 april) in Milaan, waar hij een nieuwe centrale organisatie aankondigde die SkyTeam vanuit Amsterdam gaat aansturen. “Copa heeft nog niet formeel aangegeven ons te verlaten, maar we houden wel rekening met het vertrek”, aldus Van Wijk. Copa is een voormalige dochteronderneming van Continental Airlines en nog steeds sterk aan de Amerikaanse maatschappij gelieerd. In oktober stapt Continental uit SkyTeam, om deel te gaan uitmaken van Star Alliance.

“SkyTeam was met Copa als associate airline binnen de gelederen al op zoek naar versterking op de Zuid-Amerikaanse markt”, zegt Van Wijk. “En zonder Copa is uitbreiding in die regio extra nodig.” Concurrent oneworld heeft met LAN al een Zuid-Amerikaans lid in huis, terwijl het Braziliaanse TAM toetreedt tot Star Alliance.

Ook op de Aziatische markt wil Van Wijk graag nog een nieuw lid werven. India is al geruime tijd een speerpunt van SkyTeam. “In de huidige marktomstandigheden staat toetreding van een maatschappij uit India op een laag pitje. De situatie in de luchtvaartbranche is door de economische crisis overal niet best, maar in India worden de gevolgen extra hard gevoeld. De luchtvaart is daar te snel gegroeid en potentiële SkyTeam-leden als Jet Airways en Kingfisher hebben nu de handen vol aan zichzelf.”

Van Wijk verwacht wel dat in de loop van 2009 één of meerdere nieuwe leden van SkyTeam bekend worden gemaakt. De alliantievoorzitter geeft aan dat er onder andere gesproken wordt met Malaysia Airlines en Vietnam Airlines. Ook China Eastern (China) en China Airlines (Taiwan) zijn nog in beeld.

Continental actually owns 49% of COPA, so it's reasonable to assume they'll belong to the same program as Continental.

"assume"

I assumed the same thing , especially since both of their web sites indicated they were both members of Skyteam.

2 hours on the phone and no Skyteam Mileage ticket later I found out they don't always belong to the same program.

I am only sore because I made plans with other friends based on the info from the company websites that was not honored. I ended up paying more for a ticket than I had planned.

Copa is an associate member of the Skyteam Alliance, whatever that means. Also, Skyteam does warn even for their full member flights that mileage is earned on "most" flights.

They specifically warn:

Unfortunately you have to look up the rules of the Skyteam partner's own frequent flyer program to see what rules apply.

Because of their relationship with Continental you've always been eligible for OnePass miles when flying Copa, so I assume it's another frequent flyer program you couldn't post your miles to. I hope at least you posted them somewhere so it wasn't a total loss.

I'm sorry for your trouble, thanks for posting, its a good reminder to read all the fine print, and to reread it as most of these programs are allowed to change the rules with little notice.

No they don't. They got rid of all their shares a while ago.

I noticed some people mentioned problems redeeming their skyteam miles on continental. Has anyone had problems getting skyteam miles on continental at the moment since I'm about to book my flight and still have last minute options.

You shouldn't encounter any problems until at least October.
