I'm a newbie and my first trip to CR is right around the corner. I'm a light packer and just want to know if there are any dress codes in the hotels. Are jeans/t-shirts acceptable or is a collar/button down shirt required? Are jeans allowed? I've read a ton on this site and have not seen this addressed. Possibly I missed it and if so I apologize. Any help or insight is appreciated.

Most basic attire for a Gringo at any hotel; t-shirt, shorts, sandals, and MONEY. Not even underwear is required. Only the “chicas” will encounter some resistance or looks if they are not dress some what tactfully in some hotels and restaurants.

If you are going to the KL, remember black tie only, I carry my tux on my carry on. You won't have to have it pressed (costly!!). If you visit some of the LOWER end places MP's and such you might be able to pull it off with business casual, otherwise try to keep your dress as close as possible to coat and tie!!!

I think the Presidente is the only hotels where the girls have a dress code. As for you my friend, you're on vacation, wear whatever you wanna wear. You are on vacation after all.

No. Wear whatever makes you comfortable. You aren't going to blend no matter what and you are in a known monger area so wear whatever.

Brother Spanky's post is correct insofar as it goes, namely mode of dress in the Gulch area. If you howevever decide to go to the Teatro Nacional, church on Sunday, or Barcelo Palacio SJ for music, you might consider dressing a bit better

You couldn't keep that going a little longer?? Just think of the story you could have told if you were actually sitting in KL and watched a dude stroll in in a tux!

You see enough stupid shit in the Gultch and it is his first trip. He will make mistakes all over the place but bringing a tux won't be one of them.

Good advice so far (except for the tux! ).

Around the hotel, wear what you like.

If you leave the hotel, please try to be somewhat respectful of your hosts. There are already enough "Ugly Americans" roaming around without us adding to their ranks. And we from this forum already have a bad rep to live down.

Out and about wear pants, not shorts (except at the beach). Jeans are acceptable, but slacks (eg. Dockers) look better. T shirts are acceptable but a polo or button-up short sleeved shirt looks much better.

Don't run out and buy a new wardrobe for your trip. You can most likely make what you already have work for you. Most anything is acceptable so wear what you like.

I agree with Western and others about your attire. Today at the SL most of the guys were in T-shirts, jeans and the ever present white tennis shoes. Until someone on the board brought that up, I never realized we all seem to wear white tennis shoes.

The SL also has a dress code inspection when the chicas come in. I have seen the staff ask some chicas to leave because their attire was not appropriate.

I prefer an nice ironed button up shirt, khacki slacks and decent deck shoes or loafers. I feel good, and do not feel over or under dressed. I leave sport coats and ties at home. Shorts and tee shirts are for the eco trips.
