If you are travelling light with maybe one bag, just catch the San Jose bus outside the airport... Ride it until the end for about 50 cents and then get a taxi to the SL for a couple of bucks.

If you walk at a normal pace about 3 hours. Off course it most likely will take you less time considering you have a good chance of being transported part of the way in an ambulance. CR has a very high incidence of pedestrian deaths on the auto pista. Just count the yellow hearts on the pavement between the airport and San Jose. Each one represents a pedestrian fatality.

It sounds like this is his first trip to San Jose. Not sure I would recommend the bus to a complete newbie.

If you walk it is only about 15 miles if you don't end up as road kill.
