When giving a cab driver directions is there a rule of thumb to follow?

Do you mention the calle first than the avenida?

Do you mention the calle or avenida that the building is on first and than the 2 calle or avenida it is between?

Which would be correct?

Calle 7, Avenida 5 y Avenida 7

Avenida 5 y Avenida 7, Calle 7

Cab drivers are not to sharp on street names and definitely can't read a map.Land marks or well known places help as much as anything.Sometimes you get lucky and get a good one but not often.rbc100

RBC100, that is just too funny. I guess I better leave all of my stateside expections home. If I wanted to go to Oasis than I guess the best thing is to say Machu Pichu and keep my fingers crossed. Since my pronunciation is not that great, if I wrote it on a piece of paper would the drivers be able to read and comprehend?

I am beginning to wonder which will be the greatest shock,,,,,,,,,all of the beautiful chicas or the culture shock

It may help to tell the driver Norte of Paseo Colon on Calle 32 as there is anouther Machu Pichu and you don't want to end up at the outher one.They do all know Paseo Colon just have him stop at Kentuky Fried Chicken.It is on Calle 32 and Oasis is a block and a half north on the left.rbc100

Hahaha, I guess I will be touring SJ like never before. I have made notes from all of the posts I have read here. Actually I can't imagine anyone going to CR without the help of the CRT members. Right now I have my own set of "stickys" in a word document which I will bring and protect as much as my Passport.

I hope I say Paseo Colon the correct way so the driver doesn't try to pass it up my colon. There will be a major fistfight, hope my younger days can kick it when I could kick butt.

Looking forward to the trip, just the preparations are a lot of fun. Looking at a nice set of tetas, that do not sag, will get me started.

Also, there are (or were the last I knew) two hotels called Morazon.
There's the one next to the KL in the Gulch, and another one a couple
of blocks north of the Holiday Inn. I think the 'other' one is called
Hotel Costa Rica Morazon. Someone correct me if it's no longer there
with that name. One time a taxi driver took me there from the airport, and I had to direct him to the Morazon in the Gulch.

The other posters are absolutely right on about cabbies and directions. However if you do provide a street address, the street it is on is usually given first and then the cross streets it is between is given next. Cab drivers rarely seem to understand addresses given that way anyway. In your Oasis example, they often would not even know what Machu Pichu was let alone that there are 2 of them, which seems really odd to me since it is a fairly well-known restaurant.

The part I really wanted to add to this discussion is that the last time I was there the cab driver I had didn't know Oasis, the street addresses or Machu Pichu. At first, he didn't even seem to know what Kentucky Fried Chicken was or KFC. BTW, the KFC on Paseo Colon is impossible to miss just head down the street and you will see it on your right (look for the Colonel sitting on a bench out front ). You can walk it from there. Anyway, finally the cabbie seemed to understand and said "Ah, Pollo de Kentucky". I always thought they didn't translate brandnames like that. Working with cabbies in SJ can be a real challenge. It can frustrate you or you can just go with the flow and look at it as a new experience that is part of what makes being in CR different and unique.

I will make Oasis my first stop. I think the challenge of getting there will be greater than finding a nice chica. Also with the help of CRT members I have enough info to dine at Yand dine at the restaurant all in the same area.

Is there a 911 number to call for a veteran CRT member to bail you out when you really get lost in CR? LOL Just kidding, I go with the flow.

90% of the Taxi Drivers in CR are just plain PHucking Clueless... I'm talking even popular Hotels, Restaruants, Etc, they are just Clueless...

Last trip, we wanted to go to an Italian Restaurant, between Zapote & Los Yoses called Il Rotorno... Cabbie claimed he knew exactly where it was.... Of course I had the phone # in my pocket in case..

After driving for 10-15 minutes (ITS 5 MINUTES AWAY) He starts doing loop de loops and I ask him where the PHuck are you going.. he just looks at me like OK I'm lost.... Give him the phone # he calls the Restaurant and we are there 5 minutes later.. Mind you he expects the meter rate even though its about 600 colones, the meter is reading 1500 because of his driving in circles...

We settled on 1K.....

NOW if you say NIGHTCLUB or anyplace they get a commission, they will have you there befor you can say I think its this way!

There actually were three places to stay with the name of Morazan, all
within a few blocks of the Gulch. Two blocks north of the Holiday Inn
was the La Casa Morazan. Two or three blocks east of the Parque Morazan, half-way to the Parque Nacional, was the Hotel Morazan. The hotel in the Gulch (next to KL) is called the Hotel Costa Rica Morazan. Now that I think about it, I can understand the taxi driver taking me to the 'wrong' hotel. It actually wasn't his fault in that case.

Gamlingman hit on the best reason for either having your own cellphone or at least having the phone # of your destination. Even if the taxista seems to know where you're going, it's not a bad idea to have him call the restaurant or whichever to confirm the directions. After all, your destination wants you there to do business, yes? And not angry at being led all 'round Robin Hood's barn. So figure they'll guide'm on in accurately. Sorry if this is too obvious.

By the way, for those people that don't speak much spanish, how you pronounce things really makes a difference. It may sound odd, but if you say the same word in a latin accent, they have a better chance of understanding you. Strange but true.

To go to KFC, you would say Restaurante (res-ta-ron-teh) Kah-fah-say.

if you say kay-eff-see, they won't know what you're talking about.
