This was my third stay at Amistad. Happy to say that the heavy construction has ceased and the tasks underway now are more in the nature of moving in new furniture and finishing work. The lobby will give the appearence of a more high end hotel. The bar and restaurant are still works in progress.

My room was one of the penthouse suites, #310. It's a large room with a good size sitting and TV area with a huge sectional couch which could hold 10 people easily. There is another area adjacent with another couch and faux fireplace and desk. If you need to work while in CR, this room was conducive to it.

A small "kitchen" is available with a good size mini fridge. Once the hotplate is replaced with a microwave, the kitchen will work well.

The bed is upstairs in a loft with another television. They are supposed to replace the conventional mattress with memory foam, but the old one was fine.

The room was very comfortable and provided a nice place to hang out. This could very easily be a party room and no doubt has seen its share of debauchery.

Fortunately, the relative lack of construction made the morning buffet a simpler process than before. The cooks were always ready to provide whatever I needed and were always helpful. The cleaning staff do a good job and will wash your clothes for free. The front desk staff are congenial and helpful.

I had a couple of issues with this room (should be a phone upstairs, the hotplate shocked me and should be replaced by a microwave, the water in the shower can take some time to get going), but bringing them to Matt's attention can make a difference. Given that the rooms are all new now, and the hotel is still a work in progress, I would suggest that Matt actively solicit comments and suggestions from all guests.

Finally, the price for this room was about $95, minus the sizable CRT discount. Would I stay again? Absolutely!! Will it be my first choice in CR? No, not as long as SL has rooms available in the new wing. I like SL because of the ambience. But Amistad has grown on me and will give SL a run for the money.

Nice review - hope the info I gave you helped. I agree, the Amistad is not my first choice either if the SL has rooms available as I like the atmosphere of the SL better. However, the rooms at Amistad are nice and location can't be beat so it is definetly my second choice. As a matter of fact, I will be there for 4 days starting this Sunday.

Absolutely! I am grateful for your preview. I think you nailed it when you told me it was a very nice room, but a little quirky. I believe the Amistad will grow in popularity when construction is over and the bar is open. Even so, I think the dining tables in the middle of the lobby will have the effect of detracting from the overall ambience, and continue to give the place an ecotourist feel. A seperate dining room would help, IMO.
