I preface this with I have been around beach towns much of my life and stayed in everything from a hostel in Eastern Europe to a penthouse suite in San Francisco.
I just spent three nights with the new VIP (Very Inefficient Personnel) program. For the VIP program you must rent a suite for three nights consecutively. This includes shuttles to and from the airport for 1 person, a massage for 1 person and 10% off hotel food and beverage.
I had a Suite for 150.00 tax inc per night also hooked up with a bro that had the 90.00 a night interior room. I brought my own Tica for my stay. Luckily it rained two of the three days so majority of the trip was indoors.
The Suite: A standard sized room and bath partitioned in the middle by double doors. One of the partitioned sides consisted of a large bed, nightstand, single closet and dresser. The other side was a small kitchen table, Love seat that folded out to small small small bed, little stove, fridge, sink and TV. This is not a good room for sharing with a wingman. The balcony and two chairs did accompany a beautiful view of the beach.
The Standard Room: This room consisted of a Queen sized bed, dresser, night stand, TV and small bath. A view of the pool and tables set up in the common hallway by the door to act as a patio.
Some of the typical problems found in even the best beach hotels were present at the Copa. Low water pressure, inconsistent water temperature, mold and roaches.
The Pros: Food was prepared well and fresh. Nice view of ocean from the suite. I will post a picture in VIP CR scenery gallery. The maids did a great job making up the room and cleaning up once every morning. Fresh paint and landscaping was evident throughout the exterior. As for being close to the Beatle bar there are other hotels closer and I took a cab to the end of the strip for 800 colones. Really no need to walk anywhere unless you like walking.
The Cons: Might want to get a fresh drink for this part. Booked the room through Barbara in email Feb. Made sure to specify Suite for 2 people any CRT disc would be appreciated. Took deposit for 1 night confirmed 150 was CRT rate in May. Found out on CRT site about VIP package. Asked Barbara if we were eligible, times for shuttle, local shuttle contact number if problem. Confirmed shuttle times and eligibility no number. My bad I was running late to the airport for shuttle and cab driver said he would take us for 65.00 plus the 15.00 for partial airport ride. Cab ride worked out great. Checked in, desk confirmed they called my old hotel and shuttle waited for me. Apologized for my delay got keys went to room. Jaco was nice and humid last weekend when we showed up. Nice stocked beverage fridge but fridge turned off. Room very warm AC turned off. No problem turn everything on went to town had lunch. Phone not working desk guy came right up put little scotch tape on the cable works now. Only wireless internet to be found was canciones del mar hotel next door. Worked pretty well from my room but next room down guy said signal too weak for his PC. Ate dinner two nights there service poor. Wanted drinks at pool hunted guy down each time. At no time did I see discount on any hotel ticket I signed and it was so slow just getting the bill that one time I just left after dinner and the guy found me at lunch next day to sign the bill. The AC in the room is wrong. You cannot put the thermostat five feet away from the vent that blows on it. The AC went on and off every ten minutes all night and day. When I did get time to sleep it was pull the blankets on freezing kick the blankets off burning up. If you wanted to watch TV you had to go to the room with the couch. The standard room had some kind of shower or toilet leak that made the floor wet the entire time. The main complaint from most guests I talked to was service. To get food, drink or something fixed was an ordeal. And when you’re ready to check out allow 30-40 minutes while they try to figure your bill out. Apparently the nice new computer at the front desk is only to messenger the novio and amigas. I have seen Asians with abacuses do weekly receipts quicker than the girl with a calculator and scraps of paper. Added the room, 6 phone calls and 5 food and bev tickets. When I asked if my 10% was off the food and bev slips she was adding up, I got a yes and they were quickly covered up. Then they wanted 20 for my free shuttle. Now the shuttle was for 1 person not 2. Oh and the massage I decided to pass on because it was for 1 person not for both of us. I saw about six ticas partying with some older gringos at the pool over the three days. If that was another CRT member, I mean no offense just not my kind of party this trip.
Bottom line for the price it is not worth staying there. Will definitely try another place next trip. I found one CRT member on the shuttle back that was friends with manager and said his party had no problem the night they were there. For what they charge I would not be using that place on a monger trip but wanted to impress the novia this trip. From the street and beach the Marriott, and Tangiers looked nice but so did the Copa looks can be deceiving as we all know. Will try the Canciones probably next trip based on Thirdworlds review.
The coast seems to be reported on very little on the board. Would like to see a section on coastal destinations, reviews and recommendations. I am hesitant to venture out of San Jose when I don’t have good intel on where I am going.
