Outstanding. A nice convenience. I would say though, that based on my experience, printing out the boarding pass in advance is usually a waste of time. Unless something has changed there also, I was always made to exchange the pre-printed pass for one printed at the airport on airline ticket stock. If you have a bag to check (in which case they'll always reprint the passes) it really saves no time at all.

If you just have a carry-on, will the airport police at the front of the check-in line collect the departure tax form and allow you to proceed directly to immigration? Or can you just give the departure tax form to the immigration officer directly? Also, there was a rumor that there would be no paper form if you bought the departure tax at SL or another non-airport agent. Is that true? And if so, at what point is it verified that the departure tax has been paid? (i.e. do you still have to make an appearance at the airline ticket counter?)

This is going to be good, but we need to know exactly how it's going to work. Need a field report. I'll be back on March 29 and give it a try if no one reports by then.

Gentlemen,

Just tonight I witnessed that we had a good customer/guest who is a Continental Airlines Pilot buy his "Exit Tax" from our front desk and charge it to his room for a flight out tomorrow....Proof positive that this convenience product works for a few if not for many!

Good question...not sure if he was the pilot or a passenger on the flight the next day. I will ask him next time I see him, or one of the other guests we have that are commercial airline pilots. A crewmember would never have to pay the departure tax out of his or her own pocket. However, they might have to still fill out the paperwork and have the tax paid by their company. Any crewmembers care to chime in here and tell us how your company handles this issue?

Another good reason to drop by Sportsmens and have a drink. It's been two years since my last CR trip, and I could have sworn I used to pay $26 departure tax. Has the tax increased by $2?

Correct, I was walking down Ave Central one day and noticed the Gran Hotel is now selling it as well for a $3 service charge. $29. I paid it for the convenience. I will definitely pay the extra $2 at SL to save the walk from the far side of the terminal over to the AA check in Thanks Bill for another great service provided...

SR I was told by the Tax agents/New Bank involved that the procedure after you buy your tax (which is the same form as before) has not changed. The only advantage I see is that you already have your form already filled out in hand when you arrive at the airport and you do not need to stand in line, make the purchase at the Tax Counter inside the airport then fill out the form before lining up at the Airline counter check-in.

Another benefit not mentioned is that if you go to pay the Departure Tax at the SL, you'll most likely have actual cash to pay it and not have to credit card it at the airport (made that mistake once). You rock, Brother TS.

Since the person is "in-transit", no departure tax is required. I've passed through SJO several times on my way further south as an "in-transit passenger" and my departure tax was waived. I even left the airport to visit a girlfriend who lives in Alajuela while on "in-transit" status.

Thanks Bill. The departure tax has always just been a pain in the butt. Next time down I will just tack it on the room fee and be done with it. One less hassle of the Costa Rican government to deal with and another great reason to do business with the Sportsmen Lodge.

Last month was the first time I had purchased it away from the airport. I went to the bank with some other guests at SL. It was a waste of time. Probably waited 30 minutes at the bank. I was going to go back to getting it at the airport, but if it's available at SL, I will definitely obtain it there, Just another full service perk at Sportsman Lodge.
