Does anyone have any recommendations on self defense weapons to carry with you when in Costa Rica or at least have on your person in your room? It needs to be something that can be put in checked luggage legally or easily bought when in Costa Rica.

I believe residents can get a gun license but obviously that is probably not desirable or realistic for a short term tourist. In the states I often carry a Gerber knife and mace. Both are legal (assuming the knife is no more than 3 inches in most states) but I'm not sure if I can put them in checked baggage or if I'd get into trouble if they were found in CR.

I don't really party and barely drink and even I have found myself in some hairy situations that thankfully didn't go anywhere. A couple stray dogs, an angry puta or two, a beggar that wouldn't leave me alone. I always felt particularly vulnerable in these situations because unlike in the states, all I had was my bare hands (or a hidden kitchen knife in my room).

Any recommendations?

1. Drop wallet and tennis shoes.
2. Personal alarm siren.
3. Mossberg 590 shockwave.

Paranoia paranoia every body is coming to get you

Relax

Don’t go off the beaten path at night unless via tax / Uber

Daytime, the city is safe sans the ghetto

So you are suggesting no Mossberg? What about the Morazon Zombies?

I use to get all paranoid also when I was younger and the late Irish Drifter would get on me about it but statistically I have found it much safer in a "controlled" whore house environment than when I was a general tourist. Many more taxi rip offs late at night especially around El Pueblo

Stay in the whore zone and don't stray from it especially late at night.

You can buy pepper spray in CR. Try a gun store. There is one near the Morazon hotel.

You can buy it, but can you use it effectively? You are almost as likely to spray yourself or a bystander (and get an assault charge against you). The spray is effective against dogs or to brandish as a threat. A personal siren alarm is more effective. You can practice with it, nobody gets hurt, no charges filed, and it is re-usable. You can get one for $20 on Amazon. Just don't buy a pink one, opt for the manly camo one.

Also, carry a 'burner' wallet; photocopy of passport, sacrificial credit card, $20. Everything else in the room safe. Use a burner phone that you can drop; refurbished phone, local SIM, hobby social media accounts.

Nothing you lose is worth your time, freedom, or life.

Nobody wants to have fun here any more.

I RELISH the thought of a knock down drag out on the mean streets of San Jose.

No weapons needed, anyone bugging you, land a monster Mike Tyson sucker punch on them to knock them off balance and go in for the beat down from there.

Go home with some ho stories and and some cuts and bruises you can proudly show off...

Nurse Ratchett: "What have you been doing with your life???"

Jack Nicholson : "F*ckin' n fightin'...

You only live once...

Don't be afraid of dying...be afraid of never living... 8)

Your best weapon is your BRAIN. Use it.

Don't make yourself a target.
Don't be out in public drunk.
Don't use drugs.
Safety in numbers, try to be out with other people.
Don't be on the street late at night (nothing good happens after midnight anywhere).
Don't flash cash anywhere, especially in public.
Don't show off your house, cars, boats, etc to hookers. They have been known to set up robberies.
Don't wear jewelry/watch.
Don't have an expensive cell phone (some say don't use ANY cell phone in public).
Don't resist any robbery attempt (give up what they want fast and stay calm--they just want your stuff, they don't want to hurt you).

Very simple common sense shit that people usually break when bad things happen to them.

A store around the corner from Monica's sells brass knuckles and blackjacks......From Monica's, exit, go right to the corner, turn right for a block. On the corner.

When you get thrown in jail for assaulting a poor homeless citizen or tragic single mother citizen trying to feed her Babi*s, make sure you explain you are a foreigner here for a cheap Phuck. If all else fails present your CRT-Vip card.
