William Alexander Graham Jr., affectionately known as Papa Bill of Sportsmens Lodge passed away on Saturday, December 5th, 2020. Has was just a few days short of his 95th birthday.

Papa Bill was part of the greatest generation, a World War ll veteran. The war ended while he was stationed on an aircraft carrier between Hawaii and Japan in 1945.

Papa Bill was born on December 22nd, 1922 in Los Angeles, California. Graduated from North Hollywood High School, Los Angeles State College and UCLA, he received his master’s degree from UCLA for Accounting and Economics. He was an accountant for California State University in Northridge, California until he retired to manage his real estate business when he was 49 years old.

In 2004, he accepted his son Bill Alexander's request to go offshore and build a business to be called The Sportsmens Lodge in Barrio Otoya, San Jose, Costa Rica. He was quoted to say at the age of 78, “Do you think that I am crazy enough to start an offshore business”. He later said that The Lodge was his favorite and the most fun venture of his life.

Papa Bill died in his sleep peacefully from natural causes with his son Bill and caretakers by his side. He is survived by his daughter Pamela, and his sons Bill and Danny. Special thanks to caretaker Bianca and Manfred Hernandez.

Memorial Services pending announcement to be made in January.

My condolences to the family. I chatted with him many a time @ the sl & he was always enjoying life. Many a night I saw him & thought " I hope when I'm in my 80's & 90's I can still enjoy the fruits of the world as he still is". RIP Papa Bill.

My condolences Bill, Danny. I always loved chatting with papa Bill, and not that many years back playing pool with him and his gal. He always remembered me even though I wasn't a super frequent visitor to Costa Rica.
He was an inspiration to me.

Sorry to hear, sounds like he lived a full active life of numerous amazing accomplishments and had a fun satisfying happy time surrounded by loving friends and family his last years and made it to mid 90's!

I salute you sir, we mourn your passing and your family's loss, but if any of us live half the life it sounded like he did, we can say we led accomplished lives ourselves.

Also, thank you sir for your service, you were from the greatest generation, if not for men like you during WWII, who knows what the world would have been like, certainly not filled with freedoms and opportunity we grew up in.

Adios, Amigo, you were one of the great ones carrying the rest of us on your shoulders.

Bill,

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your father. I met him at the bar at the Sportsmens back in 2006 or 7 and really enjoyed talking with him. He had some great stories. It seems like he lived a very full life.

Again, condolences to you and your family.

I too want to express my condolences via this Forum to the entire Graham family on the passing of Papa Bill. I considered him more than a friend and was truly a great individual. I will miss our conversations and field trips to Jaco. I know you all share my thoughts and prayers for the Sportsmens extended family.
