Does anyone have anything to say about the internet in CR?

Is it as reliable as what one can get in the US/Canada/UK?

In what regard? Are you talking about internet access in hotels? Or home (or business) internet service?

Where? In the Central Valley? Liberia?

So, with out knowing any particulars of your need parameters - you could have Googled "Internet in Costa Rica" and gotten thousands of hits.

This is fairly up-to-date.

1. There are 'high speed' options.

2. It depends on where you are.

At the Lodge we previously had expensive and slow (256k) Ku satellite internet. It was stupid expensive ($700 a month), stupid slow and totally unreliable.

We now use Kolbi cellular 3g, which is mercurial (sometimes fades in and out), slow by US standards (3 mps at best), but works. Of course, we're in the remote Barra del Colorado in a place you can only access by boat (road and boat or plane and boat).

In San Jose Kolbi has 4g (maybe LTE?) and my Project Fi SIM works here.

Internet in most of the hotels in San Jose (wifi) is tolerable. You can get your email and generally there is enough bandwidth to hold a decent Skype conversation or stream audio. Streaming video is hit or miss but if you are planning on trying to use one of the US-based services (like Netflix) you will probably also need a VPN or DNS solution that allows to to "pretend" you are connecting from the US.

You could also get a SIM card with a data package. These are pretty reasonable. If you need to connect a laptop or tablet and if your phone and the SIM provider allow it, use the phone to set up a WiFi hotspot. If you do this, be sure to secure the connection or you will have a bunch of other folks in the hotel connecting to it and chewing up your bandwidth.

Also, you will find that the service goes down a lot when there are storms in the area (along with the satellite TV).

Nowadays the internet at my house (2mb/sec Cable Tica) is at least as reliable as anything I had in the US. Most folks would scoff at a paltry 2mb/sec but I am able to stream video pretty reliably with minimal buffering. I have seen no need to upgrade to faster speed. The rates for faster internet climb sharply. I pay $50/mo for TV and internet.

I also have 4G LTE service on my phone and tablet from Kolbi. This service actually works as compared to the 3G service which is completely useless.

I pay about $30/month for my Tigo high speed internet in Guadalupe. Works great. We stream movies and tv programs. I have separate TV antenna and get about 25 local stations in Espanol.
