I live in CR now. All this exchange stuff makes my head hurt. How do i determine when to pay my rent in $ or colon?

Depends. What is your landlord quoting you in, dollars or colones?

Rule of thump when dealing with multiple currencies is to pay in the currency that the price is quoted in, to eliminate exchange risk.

If you are quoted in one currency and pay in another, you risk that the conversion will be made using an unfavorable exchange rate.
