From AM Costa Rica:

Immigration agents rejected
his bus ticket from country

Dear A.M. Costa Rica:

A Bus Ticket Will Not Satisfy Immigration at Juan Santamaria.

Beware expats. The article that appeared this past Wednesday entitled “Another tale of tourists having trouble at airport" is not accurate. It indicates that a bus ticket for passage outside of the country will satisfy the immigration authorities. Well recently I and another passenger on the same flight from Atlanta, found out otherwise. We had our bus tickets, but the immigration people said that was not good enough. They indicated if I arrived by air I needed to have an air ticket out of the country! This was a new one on me, in the 10 years I’ve been regularly entering and exiting the county, never violating the 90 day visa limit.

So, I was read my rights, opted to immediately buy an exit ticket rather than be deported, was escorted to a ticket counter where I paid for a ticket to Panamá and then was escorted back to immigration to get my visa. The woman traveler on the same flight was not so lucky. I don’t think she had a credit card or means to purchase a ticket, which as I understood from the options I was given, meant that she was going to be placed on the next return flight to Atlanta on the airline which allowed her to board ‘illegally’.

At the very least, do NOT count on a bus ticket to satisfy immigration. Be prepared with an exit air ticket, or at least the means to purchase a ticket should you get intercepted by the immigration folks. Otherwise you risk having a very bad day in the land of pura vida, or at least at Juan Santamaría airport.

Just when you think they are getting with it (last law passed was supposed to allow for $100 fine per month I think so that people could spend the winter months at the expensive homes they bought without leaving every 90, but I read they found an exception. WTF? The officer can't look to see if you have ever over stayed? Or see that you are not there 6-7 months out of the year?

And what's with the 90 anyway? Most if not all US tourist visas are 6 months. My novia's 22 y.o. daughter from Europe just got some kind of visa for 10 years--10 years! Has to go back every 18 months.

Before 9.11 and then for a few years until after the whole passport thing exploded, all you needed to enter CR was your DL and a sealed birth certificate. They had a guy running around the immigration desks selling these green tourist visa cards for $3.00. Preprinted for 90 days from the date of entry. I think I have 50 of them in my CR junk box. I understand why that's different now, but I still don't get the 90 especially when you are not a perpetual proved by your passport entry/departure stamps.

I guess Panama is doing the same thing, at least at the ground border crossings, but not the aeroporto, but this is a new twist in CR airport. Last week or so, bus tickets it was reported were still were working on the NW Nica/CR border.

I guess you'll will have to buy the r/t air ticket and also purchase the cancellation insurance if you want/have to leave earlier/later then the 90.

Not sure if this idea will still work.

Way back years ago, when I lived in CR I would go on line and start the process of buying a ticket and print out the itinerary.........but would stop short of the credit card purchase page.

It worked great many times. Not sure if it would suffice now though.

I too have done the almost buy a ticket route, and it has worked several times.

I usually do it on my smart phone when they start looking like they are going to ask.

Once in a while it does not.

Just buy a fully refundable ticket and return it once you are in the country.

They cost more but there is no return fee.

One easy way around this stupid border requirement...just save one of you e-tickets and change the dates when needed. I have been doing it for 4 years, works great.
Make sure when you change the date it matchec with the day of the week and the date is close to 90 days otherwise you might get a visa for less than 90 days.

There is a reason they cost more. They are 100% refundable when booked online.

I've done this 10+ times and never had a problem getting into CR with 90 day stamp or getting a refund.
