I'm making a 5 day visit to SJO and would like to bring my iphone 4s. The phone is currently activated with ATT in the US. Assuming I can get it unlocked will ICE be able to accommodate me with a phone/data plan?

In case that fails, I'd like to bring a backup with me. What specifications should the phone have, besides being unlocked, in order for me to get a sim while im in SJ?

Thanks.

I bought a new, cheap, dumb phone from the Kolbi kiosk at the airport in the baggage claim area last January for $20. It had 90 minutes on it, and can be easily reloaded. I could TXT without a qwerty keyboard or a touch screen.

I got to keep the phone and the number for my next trip.

It worked for me. I don't need a smart phone. I wouldn't want to have a phone that is smarter that I am.

If u can bring a GSM quadband unlocked phones, it will work flawlessly

About ur 4S, make sure it is unlocked. At&t may trick u to believe that it will work overseas but when they say overseas they mean roaming on att or its partner. U just have to unlock ur 4S so you can use any GSM sim card not just roaming.

You need it unlocked and yes ICE/Kolbi, Movistar and Claro can all take care of you with a prepaid sim. About the unlock, if you are not out of contract AT&T is not going to unlock your iPhone. However, if you have completed your contract, go to the following page to request the unlock:

https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/client ... dCondition

if you decide to buy and bring a cheap phone, look for these specs:

GSM Band 1800
3G 850 Band (better data speeds and call quality)

Amazon and newegg.com are good sources for unlocked phones

Thanks for everyone's very helpful replies.

My phone is still in contract -- not eligible to be unlocked. However, i see there are some services that can do this on ebay, etc. Does anyone have any experience with these if it cant be software unlocked?

thanks.
