More realistic for their budgets are buy an unlocked 3g or 3gs on ebay for $75 and turn it over for $150 when you leave. I've been doing that with phones for along time. It's not gouging since you have to go thru all the bs of buying it and bringing it and guaranteeing it. And I let them pick what they what they want off of ebay so they know what I paid. Like us, they are skeptical of used goods so they will have to check it out for a day which I also insist upon--I don't want to be accused of doing something rotten. At least that's the way I do it because I deal with people that I consider friends or who I have biz dealings with. When they know I'm coming, the email orders start rolling in, phones, cameras (less now), smart cards, notebooks, i-pods etc. I use them when I'm there and go home lighter.

The ticos that can spend $800 know how to get one at your price. Bring an extra unlocked phone, even older junk, for your personal use for the last day and your trip back north.

you will never make that much profit. you can probably double what you paid for it. but ticos read ebay and other US sites and have a good idea what the costs are. Plus, the pool of customers for an $800 phone is very limited. It tops out at around $500 unless you let them pay in 2 payments.
