I really need a good map. Which way from SJ to Puriscal? And how many miles from Heredia?

It's a long taxi ride from San Jose! You can take a Puriscal bus which leaves from San Jose. If you have a car drive west on the new toll road starting at Sabana Sur and exit at Ciudad Colon, location of the second toll booth along the way. Keep heading west, passing through Colon, from the town of Ciudad Colon it's about another 25 min. drive from there to Puriscal. Sorry I can't give you the distances.

go to coca cola bus station and catch the express for 650 colones
or take a taxi for 20000 colones, negotiate the rate beforehand
about 40 miles from heredia

If you are driving, what I'd do is follow the bus. It might not be the most direct route but you'll doubtless see interesting stuff at a more relaxed pace. Just sayin...
Of course Google Maps can help too.
