For those who don't have the means to live in Costa Rica without working, and don't have the legal right to work, I suggest reading the article below.

http://www.nocalcostarica.com/2012/07/how-to-screw-up-royally-in-costa-rica/

Since the writing of that article, the person in question has been deported, under armed guard. If and when he can return to Costa Rica is unknown. He was buying a house here, and its fate is also in doubt. If I hear more I'll pass it along.

Didn't know CR could detain you for that length on an immigation hold. Shoot, in the US they let them out on a $500 bond and a promise they will voluntary depart the US, or that' s the way it used to be pre 9.11

I believe the main mistake was giving anyone a thing to use against him i.e. that disgruntled ex-employee. If you are on the down low, stay inconspicuous to everyone. But wait--overstayed his visa by 13 months? Didn't this guy have anybody advising him? Or wouldn't he listen? Unfortunate but so avoidable

The overstaying of his 90 days allowed under his TOURIST visa may not have helped his cause it was not the primary reason he was deported. If they catch you working illegally you will be deported. Normally you are barred from reentering the country for 10 years but in some cases they bar you for 5 years. Most cases I have heard about the person was caught because someone with a grudge dropped a dime to immigration which resulted in a subsequent investigation.

The guy was told repeatedly to get his act together, but he wasn't a very good listener, and always thought he had an angle, always trying to get away with shit. Rumor has it he had an affection for a certain powdered substance that is illegal but cheap down here. He was lucky not to be holding when he was detained. He's back in the USA now. If I find out how long he will be barred from returning, I will share the info.

How long was he held in custody before they deported him? And what did they do, if you know, put him on an airplane to the closest American airport which I presume would be Miami?

In this case, he had enough money to buy a ticket to his home city. He was held a few weeks. He might have left sooner but he was hoping to buy his way out of trouble. He couldn't and so he was deported.
