I've read the various threads about retiring in CR and it seems there was a reoccurring theme about checking it out for 90 days in several areas to see what it would be like. That being said, what would one do during this time to make the final determination that this is the place for them? With the constant checking of several areas, apartments, being on the go, mongering, etc. this doesn't seem like really acclimating to the culture in 90 days. For me this would seem more like an extended vacation. Once the daily grind of going to the bank waiting long hours, visiting the hospital for a doctors appointment, going grocery shopping trying to find items one couldn't and dealing with the slower pace, it doesn't seem like one could really know in a 3 month trial. Or maybe this is why a lot of people return in a year or two because they weren't really sure and didn't realize what it would be like. So my question is what to do during that time to really know retiring in CR is the right move? Of course mongering goes without saying. But besides that, living daily life. |

the theory about 90 days or 120 days or whatever is to find the right "Costa Rica" for you. That includes the town, culture, climate, location (beach, mountains, city) and many other factors. Costa Rica is Costa Rica is true to a point, but there are many micro-factors that can determine where you want to live and can be happy. Never, never buy until you stay here for a year, maybe two. You have to find the right spot for you and then see if this culture is compatible with you. It ain't for everyone. Lastly, my experience (and I have heard it from many) is that mongering becomes much less important the longer you are here. You phuck a lot ![]() |

Try this little twist and should really tell you something about whether you would like living here. Spend some major chunks of your time staying away from the gulch and monger scene. Don't be blinded by the little pink snappers and be fooled into thinking you like living here. There will be plenty of time for chicas so find out if there are other activities and things to do in the area you are checking out. Go to the mall, see a movie, grab a paper in the morning and reading it in the park. If in San Jose go downtown to the area around the Coca Cola. Familiarize yourself with the bus system and explore where you can go. You can go from Coca Cola to Multiplaza for about 60 cents. Downtown a flew blocks over from the Del Rey, in front of Mas X Menos, you can catch buses that go to Mall San Pedro and Terra Mall. Check out restaurants and grocery stores and find out if you will be happy with the food here on a day to day basis. Set a little time aside each day and learn a little more Spanish. It's great if you can take formal classes. If not learn what you can. If you were to commit to learning just 3 words a day, your vocabulary would increase 90 words a month. It adds up. What would you do on a daily basis if you retired back in the States? See if you can find the activities and interests you would want back there. |
