I looking around on craigslist and just thought I would put it out there. I'm living in the city now and currently residing in the Hotel Johnson. It gets a little depressing, not to mention expensive to be living in a dive long term. I am looking to rent a room in a house or share an apt. and just thought I would put the feelers out as a longshot someone on the board might know someone with a spare room. I'm working in Pavas so want something that is a reasonably short bus ride there. Only requirements I really have is to have my own room and to have DEPENDABLE internet. Any tips or info is appreciated. I'm pretty quiet, don't smoke (doesn't bother me though). Thanks...

What price range are you looking to pay a month? Also, furnished or unfurnished?

I have another friend looking for a spot in the same area now and he has seen a few spots that were pretty nice and convenient.

Been a few years since I did this. Was hoping to keep it around $250-$300 per month (my share) and furnished. Had a pretty nice place for $250 in Curridabat 4 years ago, but do not know the market at all these days. I might be unrealistic here. Had a chica that was a friend of a friend that had a good deal for me but I missed it. Thanks for asking and thanks for the help.

I will ask my buddy this afternoon and PM you if he came up with anything that sounds like it will fit your budget.

I would suggest deciding on what areas you want to live in. Then visit the local markets/stores where Ticos posts things for rent/for sale on cork boards. By far the best deals are found there.

Just a thought, and good luck.

Seabreeze, that is exactly what I have in mind. When I used to live near Curridabat, there were tons of announcements like that at Automercado... Today, I'm going to figure out bus routes to know how large my potential living area might be. Anything that is within a 15-30 minute bus ride is a possibility.. Although, the closer the better with rainy season... Pavas or Sabana would be ideal, but not ruling out SJ and a couple other areas.

Please tell me this is not Hotel Nuevo Johnson? That place is worse then a dump; sleeping on the streets will be a better solution! I stayed there for 2 days and I left. I got tired of that dump. Watch your stuff and the staff! Alot of scams on Craigslist just to fore worn you. Go to Hotel La Amistad and talk to Alex or Rudy. Im sure one of those guys have some connections somewhere. They are in the tourist industry!

Yes, them, but my go-to guys would be Bill at the SL or Boyd at the HLH. Maybe also the house taxista at the Dunn Inn, Sergio or Brother PuraVidaTransport.

Jesus....are you nuts  - that place is a shithole, and located in a not too great neighborhood. Depressing  :?: After a week there I'd be ready to open my veins - what was your next choice - the Hotel Asia :?:

OK OK - let me make some suggestions vs just busting your balls over where you are living currently

Check the CRT classifieds - there is currently what looks like a very reasonable place advertised (no, not @ $250/mo - but you are over $400 where you are for - lets face it - not great accomodations - I think the Apts on CRT were like $400/mo) but cheap none the less - looked OK too, but who knows from a picture.

If you are looking for cheap, you gotta think and act in this regard like a Tico - I would not waste my time w/ Craigs List, nor any publication geared to gringos - you need to ask the Ticos at your hotel, people like Bill at the Sportsmans, Boyd, Bruce, Don Ursulo at HLH - in other words, guys w/ a clue - you might also PM BangBang57 (lives in San Jose; does not post, but reads the board - tuned into whats happening) - another good guy is Bilko - PM him too.

Frequent poster, K Paxian, just moved down; he may have some insight and be able to offer suggestions. Good Luck :)

I live in a dinghy place, drink in dank spots, waiting for the right spot... haha Yeah, it ain't the most pleasant place here but if suffices. I've been up, I've been down.. do what i gotta do. Could be worse... Craigslist got me work.. just a free place to see what shakes out. the plan? I have done it and know I can live much better if I share. Gonna check out a room in Pavas this weekend. BUT, what I can get on my own for $400 ain't shit. But 2 people sharing a $700 place is pretty nice. It's all good, i have lots of patience.. :D I'm sentimental, Johnson is first place I ever stayed when I came here 13 years ago. CAn live in a box and eat rat for a while if i know it will not be long..haha

Im not saying to stay there! All I'm saying is go and ask the people mentioned above if they know of any places that will fit your budget. There are good places down there but $400 a month sounds more like banditos territory. 13 years later and you went back to the same place? I suppose history really does have a way of repeating itself huh. Not making fun of you in anyway but are you sure CR is working out for you? It sounds like you haven't progressed in the 13 years you been there. Just FYI, there is an apartment under the Classifieds on this board. Everything included for $400 a month. Supposedly gated too! Anyway best of luck to you finding a place to stay.

I had good luck finding a half-decent place (not great, but not bad) for $450 per month in San Pedro, fully furnished and includes all services. Through a friend down here, I got in touch with a guy named Fred (his real name Farid Cifuentes). He is a real estate agent here and speaks great English. Does not charge you, the apartment owner pays him. Good thing about using an agent - you don't get jacked for gringo prices. My first place I did all the negotiating myself and was paying $850 for a place that was only slightly better than this one.

Typically you're going to have to sign a minimum 6 month lease, and will lose your deposit if you break your lease. If you want, give him a call - 506-8394-2020, or faridcifuentes@yahoo.com.
