The more people I talk to the more I understand what Greengo is talking about. Just check Craigslist in Autos,Furniture,Real Estate,ect sure seems like a lot of people are bailing.

well, with tax systems like the Hacienda Tax System, one could argue that basic laws of economics do not translate well into spanish......

As you suggested I checked the last 100 postings on Graigslist in both autos and real estate. What I found that a total of 5 ads out of those 200 mentioned leaving the country as their motivation for selling. You would think that anyone wanting to sell quickly would include that as a motivating factor for the prospective buyer to make an offer. In the auto section far more people indicated they were willing to accept a trade. That is hardly indicative of someone fleeing the country in fear of their life as Greengo likes to portray

After the results in those two categories I did not waste my time checking furniture sales. Perhaps you can check the last 100 out and report back how many of those sellers are fleeing. It would also be interesting if you would give us some idea of how many people you have talked to who indicated they are bailing out of CR and where you chatted with them. Most gringos who own real estate, cars and furniture spend little time in the gulch conversing with mongers.

Then there is the other fascinating conundrum at work here. If there is a mass exodus of gringos from Costa Rica and they are dumping their property in order to beat a hasty retreat to their homeland why are real estate and car sale prices still so high. Does the market not understand that there is a surplus of goods for sale so the prices should be being driven down. Guess basic supply and demand does not speak Spanish.

An unidentified North American survived a violent home invasion Sunday night, and one of the intruders died in a firefight.

The Judicial Investigating Organization said that the death followed a shootout between a neighbor and the intruders. The scene was in a home in the upscale Barrio Mercedes section of Atenas, about five minutes from the center of town.

The dead man was still unidentified. Agents said he was about 25. A second assailant is believed to have suffered a bullet wound in the leg.

The intruders were heavily armed, said judicial agents. The men broke into the home through locked gates and a door to confront the North American occupant who was reported alone in the dwelling. That was about 8 p.m.
Judicial police said that a neighbor saw what transpired and began shooting at the intruders to cause them to flee.

Unofficial reports credited the fatal shot to the homeowner victim.

Home invasions are reaching epidemic proportions in the areas outside the Central Valley. Crooks find the pickings easier when the homes are isolated.
Frequent targets are homes in sections with substantial expat populations. Homes in Barrio Mercedes range up to $600,000 or more.

Some police sources estimated that there are three or four such invasions every night, although not every one makes the news.

this to me would be thee most serious detriment to living in CR fulltime as a homeowner. It would seem that sooner or later it will happen to you.
