I would give my left nut if I could find a market in San Jose that sells lemons, and for that matter, any kind of hot peppers - jalapenos, serranos, habaneros. I like to cook and a lot of my favorites I can't make without these.

You will be able to find just about anything you need here and not far from where you live. It will just take time. I have seen yellow lemons but cant remember where right this second. BIG HINT: You may not find some items at popular supermarkets because they only carry what they can get a constant BIG supply of. I find some stuff at smaller supers. When some fruit or veggies are out of season, you will find them at the corner veggie stand or at AM/PM even but not at the big Supermarkets.

Check out the Saturday morning ferias. I can usually find jalapenos and habaneros in bag of about 12 for 300 colones. There is one each week behind the Catholic Hospital in Guadalupe, one at the Pali in Pavas and a large one in San Jose by the cemetery (which i believe is open on Sunday too.). Lettuce, potatoes, papayas, peppers, etc. are all cheaper and fresher than the supermarkets.

I actually look forward each week to my fruit and vegetable shopping. The feria in Guadalupe has the school band playing the Henri Mancini "Pink Panther" song while you haggle over the price of celery. Priceless!

The produce market located next to the San Jose municipal building on avenida 10 at about calle 36 near the cemetery is the commercial produce market as opposed to the agricultural ferias held once a week in most towns. They open about 4:00 am and most are closed up by noon Monday thru Saturday. On Sunday it becomes a flea market and very few of the produces stands are open. It is also a flea market on Saturday but many of the regulars produce stands are in business also.

Where is the cemetary in San Jose? I checked the CRT map and I don't see it.

try Mas X Menos or Auto Mercado if you want the traditional U.S. style grocery store. You will pay for what you get. They usually have Dr. Pepper by the can and 2 liter bottle in both stores (it is imported and not bottled here so the 2 liter is about $5.50 to $6.00).

I can find good jalapeno other chili peppers in these stores if I am in a hurry. Where I live in Guanacaste I have found my local options but I am not that familiar with shopping for groceries in Escazu as my housekeeper takes care of all of this for me.

Mercado Central........
I Love Habaneros Too....I buy a pound or two....put them on a cookie sheet (minus stem of course) and put them in a oven at 175 or so....6-7 hours later they are dried......put in blender and now you have the best shaker peppers on the planet.
I bring a small plastic bag of ground habaneros to CR every trip.

And I thought that only applied to Jaco

I am currently in one of our farms at this moment (thank you iPad data package with I.C.E.) and will bring some of our peppers with me today. We just planted several of the rice fields so I do not think I will even try getting to the lemon trees that are by the river.

Send me a note of how to get yo u in touch with you as I should be in San Jose by about 2:30 or so.

I have to second that one. I don't think that there is anything that you can't find at that place.

Can someone please give me an idea of where Mercado Central is? Sorry but I'm clueless as to where that is. If I tell a taxi driver " Por favor lleveme a el Mercado Central" will that do the trick? Is it well known enough so that taxi drivers know where it is?

Several people have said go to the feria near where you live. I agree. If nothing else, it is kind of fun.

Ask some of the locals, they will know when and where; and ferias are everywhere on the weekend. I like the one in Guadalupe the best.

If you take the bus to the local feria you can find a private car which will take you home so you don't have to lug you groceries on the bus. Ask them to give you a price before you get in the car.

Everyone has their own sack -- a plastic coated gunny sack - in which they carry their goods. You can buy them at the feria. There are also temporary sodas where you can have a typical Costa Rican breakfast.

It is usually a lot less expensive than the regular market. Take lots of small bills: 1000 and 2000 denominations.
