Every once in awhile the question is asked how much does it cost per month to live in Costa Rica? This article gives the opinion of one gentlemen who has a reputation of possessing a great deal of knowledge on the subject.

As you suggested I checked the last 100 postings on Graigslist in both autos and real estate. What I found that a total of 5 ads out of those 200 mentioned leaving the country as their motivation for selling. You would think that anyone wanting to sell quickly would include that as a motivating factor for the prospective buyer to make an offer. In the auto section far more people indicated they were willing to accept a trade. That is hardly indicative of someone fleeing the country in fear of their life as Greengo likes to portray

After the results in those two categories I did not waste my time checking furniture sales. Perhaps you can check the last 100 out and report back how many of those sellers are fleeing. It would also be interesting if you would give us some idea of how many people you have talked to who indicated they are bailing out of CR and where you chatted with them. Most gringos who own real estate, cars and furniture spend little time in the gulch conversing with mongers.

Then there is the other fascinating conundrum at work here. If there is a mass exodus of gringos from Costa Rica and they are dumping their property in order to beat a hasty retreat to their homeland why are real estate and car sale prices still so high. Does the market not understand that there is a surplus of goods for sale so the prices should be being driven down. Guess basic supply and demand does not speak Spanish. :P

well, with tax systems like the Hacienda Tax System, one could argue that basic laws of economics do not translate well into spanish......

Not sure I follow what you are referring to and how it relates to supply & demand. Can you expand on that observation?

So if you would have narrowed your search to areas where a lot of Gringos live you may get a few more. Try calling some of the adds iand dig a little. And who said people were leaving in a frantic rush you did. Most people that are vested in an area will try to liquidate in a reasonable sane manner as to retain as much capitol and wealth as possible. Yelling fire sale only attracts sharks. One of the best businesses a person can be in in CR is buying and selling used household goods from gringos. Call up some of those car sales and make a reasonable low ball offer and if they accept tell them you will come out and see it. And why should I check furniture sales for you I already know whats going on. A lot of you people on this board don't get out very much. 8)

Jeez, I musta missed all that hot news but did see on P.4 that a previously unknown Alfred Hitchcock silent film had been discovered in New Zealand--so the time wasn't wasted.

The article Greengo refers to concerns possible problems with employees. It is written by Garland Baker who has been in the past a frequent contributor to AM Costa Rica always on Monday and usually telling gringos about the perils just waiting to ensnare them but offering hope if they retain professional advice. Needless to say Mr. Baker has a company that just coincidentally can provide that assistance.

Quote:
Garland M. Baker is a 39-year resident and naturalized citizen of Costa Rica who provides multidisciplinary professional services to the international community.

That is not to say that some of his advice is not right on the mark as it is. Unfortunately his embellishment of the perceived problem has earned him the nick name "Mr. Doom & Gloom" in parts of the gringo community.

Inside Costa Rica not be outdone has brought on board it's own Mr. Doom & Gloom John Holtz.

If someone starts a third online English newspaper perhaps they will hire Greengo.

An unidentified North American survived a violent home invasion Sunday night, and one of the intruders died in a firefight.

The Judicial Investigating Organization said that the death followed a shootout between a neighbor and the intruders. The scene was in a home in the upscale Barrio Mercedes section of Atenas, about five minutes from the center of town.

The dead man was still unidentified. Agents said he was about 25. A second assailant is believed to have suffered a bullet wound in the leg.

The intruders were heavily armed, said judicial agents. The men broke into the home through locked gates and a door to confront the North American occupant who was reported alone in the dwelling. That was about 8 p.m.
Judicial police said that a neighbor saw what transpired and began shooting at the intruders to cause them to flee.

Unofficial reports credited the fatal shot to the homeowner victim.

Judicial police said that the neighbor exchanged shots with the intruders and hit one in the chest. The three companions fled, they said.

Home invasions are reaching epidemic proportions in the areas outside the Central Valley. Crooks find the pickings easier when the homes are isolated.
Frequent targets are homes in sections with substantial expat populations. Homes in Barrio Mercedes range up to $600,000 or more.

Some police sources estimated that there are three or four such invasions every night, although not every one makes the news.

this to me would be thee most serious detriment to living in CR fulltime as a homeowner. It would seem that sooner or later it will happen to you.

as an aside, the view from my foreclosed balcony here in beautiful, downtown SoFla of the unwashed masses streaming to and fro, up and down route 411 in a riotous parade of stolen cars, all the while firing shots into the donut shops and empty sorefronts, portends, perhaps, of more difficult times to come.

enough to make a Spartan sob!

pray, dear Brothers, where may an innocent pilgrim such as myself find solace in this unjust world?

straight into the jaws of the Heart of Darkness I go....with only my laser sight for guidance.

It is food for thought, but I do not think I will be living in half a million dollar home anytime soon

I hate to say it , they bring it on themselfs, big houses, fancy cars, etc
they want the USA life in Costa Rica, and have brougt the problems with them

If I ever move to Cr I want simple, small apt for a home base.. I have seen may places in the SJ area... no curb appeal at all... walk though a non descript gate into some real nice places... sceen it in Europe as well

Banditos are going to hit the fancy places gringo or tico, but being a gringo does not help

For anyone thinking of a move to CR.... What do you want???

A: live like I did in the US (or wear ever) and bang chicas till my money runs out

B: Looking for a simpler life, try and embrace the local culture, and learn to deal pitfalls of every day life in Costa Rica, like a trip to the bank can take all day

Sure Costa Rica has some real problem... what country does not

It is what you make of it

While gringos are bitching about the place, did they think they were moving to Florida

Many Ex-pats are very happy in Costa Rica, guess they did thier homework

I have moved around the globe a few times, and it takes some real time on the ground to know if a place is for you
