Steven1 when I met him in April on my last trip suggested a way to beat all those websites that say "you cannot access this website from outside the USA".

I just got it to work! So now I can surf unrestricted while living here! WOO HOO!!!! Thanks Steven1!!!!

Why not share rather than making us dig? :)

Get StrongVPN - just look them up. For a small monthly fee, they route you through one of their servers in the USA. Then you can access any website you want. Works great for Hulu and Netflix, those were the two that I couldn't find any other way around.

Good to know StrongVPN worked for Netflix from CR. S1 knows his stuff.

Did you get the Lite or Open package?

For those coming on this Thread but somewhat clueless about what a Virtual Private Network (VPN) is, here's a Website to help you. Includes reviews of StrongVPN and others. Personally, I'd use the recommendation of our Resident Expert (Brother Steven1) but knowledge and choice is always good: http://www.vpnreviews.com/

you can also use HotSpot Shield for free.... in one of Steven1's last posts on the subject he mentioned that it was no longer working.... a couple of days later an update came out from HotSpot Shield and corrected those errors.

I use it on virtually a daily basis for hulu.com, netflix, as well as other sites.

I got the Open version of StrongVPN. I tried Hotspotshield for free on my last work, but it would not work with Netflix. I decided to go with StrongVPN as I figure you get what you pay for, and Hotspotshield is free, and I want my connection to work consistently.

You can do the same thing with a proxy service, same principle... Some proxy services are free, although your bandwidth will be limited... Much like StrongVPN, you can get a paid proxy subscription which does not limit bandwidth, plus masks you IP address to anyone who might monitor your online activity...

VPN's have been around for a long time and were originally designed to create a secure channel over a public network where traffic may be monitored / examined / recorded / hacked... The same principle is applied the web traffic (http) through the implementation of SSL (secure socket layers) for browser-based web traffic, which is https...

Point is, for most traffic you don't need the extra layer of encryption provided by VPN if you are only stream video / audio over the net... VPN slows down the transmission of data as it is encrypted at the network layer, packetized, placed in a wrapper, sent over the wire, decrypted on the receiving end, then provided to you...

So far so good though...Netflix and Hulu appear to be streaming just fine when I am routing through the IP address of StrongVPN.

The value proposition behind services such as StrongVPN is -- among other things -- giving users the ability to fool the Netflixes and Hulus and Amazons and so forth into thinking you are a US-based IP without having to deal with the costs and the effort of setting up a US-based proxy server or dealing with an anonymous proxy. StrongVPN and similar services cater to those folks who don't want the hassle and just want it to "work" at a reasonable cost while getting good performance and available technical support if they need it.

The encrypted data stream is an added benefit, especially for those folks who want to establish secure connections to corporate sites without revealing they are working from Costa Rica.

Thought I'd revive this Thread as one of the better VPNs has a new version. Here's a review and download site:
http://download.cnet.com/hotspot-shield ... ag=nl.e415

They make the point that if you find ads annoying, you might want to opt for the paid version.
