I brought my 11 year old cat in 2006. She died last year at 15 years old. I buried her in a friend's yard. I was so sad , I swore I'd never get another animal. Then I was at a hardware store last August and a little tiny kitten crawled up my leg so I took her home after getting her shots. She'll be 1 year in July. Pricesmart sells 42lb bags of Fresh Step cat litter. I paid my vet, in the USA, $75 dollars for the necessary documents to bring my cat into CR and Migration accepted them. Delta charged my $50 to bring my cat in a carry-on bag. |

Can you eat rice and beans every day for the rest of your life? Can you shave every day with cold water? Can you use the public bus for all transport? Do you believe lime is a salad dressing? Can you share your apartment with spiders the size of mice? Can you tolerate losing 2 hours of your life every time you enter a bank? Can you live in a rough neighborhood where all you neighbors are thinking about ways to rob you 24 hours a day? If you answered yes to all those questions then you can afford the next ten years in Costa Rica on $1,000 to $1,500 a month. Then prepare to move to Nicaragua for the next 10 years after prices continue to rise. |

Cats are no problem if you have the proper paperwork. Health certificate from a licensed vet certifying they are healthy and current on their shots. Then a stamp from the USDA that certifies your vet is licensed and in good standing in the state he practices. The health certificate is time sensitive so make sure you check into that. At least that were the rules when I brought two cats here in 2003. AA charged $100.00 each and they rode in the baggage hold. TSA was a hassle as I had to remove each cat from the carrier so they could search it. Arrived San Jose no problem and when customs saw me with two live animal carriers they waved me over to a special station, took the cats paperwork, stamped it and waived me through without xraying or inspecting my personal baggage. As to cost of living that can vary widely depending on the area you live. I will say I know guys who live in San Jose on less then $1500 per month and they do not have live with most of the problems that have been mentioned in this thread. The biggest flaw I see in your reasoning is your guess as to life expectancy. Many guys I know have lived far longer then they thought they would when they thought about it and were your current age. |

USwam wrote: move to south florida instead. pm me if you want more info. Why???? I live in Miami (over 32 years), and lets just say the 2 places - S FL and CR - have little in common (except more English is spoken in CR ![]() ![]() Seriously, with what he has available to spend, in S FL he is priced out of the market - while CR is no longer the cheap place it was 15 or 20 years ago, you can live better there on what the OP's budget is vs S FL. |

It is my personal belief that living in Costa Rica, Medellin, etc. or even being a regular visitor can add 5-10 years to your life as well. It has been proven that people that have a reason to wake up each day live longer, whether it be a garden or a girl(s). |

Take your time and do your homework. Considered it once and after a couple extended stays (with time spent outside the gulch) it didn't take long to see the real CR and what a pain in the ass practically everything is, especially trying to make a living. The happy guys are the ones that don't have to worry about making money anymore. Sorry to break it to you but with 240k to your name at 46 the party probably won't last long and you'll be renting the sofa in Greengo's hovel. ![]() |
