OK, last major obstacle to me moving to CR is gone, so I booked my ticket yesterday. I depart on June 30 and return approximately 90 days later then will start doing the 90 day tourist thing until either I die or I get tired of Costa Rica. |

My move will be end of July or the first of Aug. Just need to tie up a few loose ends. Been working on it for almost 3 years. Look forward to meeting all of you soon. Everyone needs some good running buddies. |

Are you new ex-pats planning on living in SJ, or settling in other areas (like San Ramon, Perez Zeledon, etc.)? |

Me too, I'm starting out in San Pedro and will stay there until I have a chance to explore and see if I like another area better. |

IMO, there are many other nicer locations in CR than San Jose. However, I can understand the desire to start out in a familiar place, and near the center of the ex-pat community. Costa Rica is a beautiful country with lots to explore outside San Jose. There is also the question of how "local" you wish to go...living in a gated community with other gringos... or in one of the smaller towns or pueblos with fewer ex-pats for your support system. Good luck, to you guys. |

Well I did a dry run on my luggage for my Thursday departure. I'm taking three checked bags so I know Continental is going to charge me $30 for the second and $150 for the third (cheap compared to UPS or Fedex - they want $700 to ship a 20 lb box via International Economy class). But one of my bags is 55 lbs, five over the limit, and I've already cut what I'm taking to the bone. So I'm hoping they don't charge me too much for those extra 5 pounds.... |

"Customers who travel in Economy Class with checked baggage over 50 lbs (23 kg) and not exceeding 70 lbs (32 kg) will be charged at the rate of up to $200 per piece depending on the destination. Baggage weighing from 71 lbs (32kg) to 99.9 lbs.(45 kg) will be charged at a rate up to $400 per piece, depending on the destination. These charges are in addition to any charge assessed for additional or oversized baggage." |

These are the limits for an economy class ticket. Do you have any way to get bumped to first class ? Can you pay extra or do you have a friend that can add you to their "status" program ??? I don't know a lot about Continental but for Delta, first class is 3, 70 pound bags And a carry on and a purse/backpack- computer bag. You can bring on one carry one that they do not usually weigh and backpack and I even bring a "shopping bag".

Try a photography or fishing/hunting store. You could probably buy a vest to hold 5 lbs much cheaper than the excess baggage fees the airlines are charging lately. Or with all the credit card deals out there right now, sign up for one of those and book a first/business class ticket. Usually it's not really worth it to redeem to a close destination like CR, but with your baggage (instead of shipping)... |
