Post subject: | Question re: sporting goods in CR |
I was talking with a favorita of mine over the weekend while in town & she told me that her son loves American football & wants to play it, but there is no school in CR for him to go to. I told her that it is a very different thing from playing football as a video game, but she says that he wants to try it. I asked if you could even buy an American football in CR & she said that she doesn't think so. I find that kind of hard to believe, although I guess it is possible. Anyone living in San Jose ever seen one in a store? If so, was the cost outrageous? I told her that I would buy him a ball so he could try it, but was hoping to avoid bringing one with me. Thanks in advance, El O |

I have never seen a football in Costa Rica stores but have never looked for one. I know a couple of years ago there was a flag football league in Santa Ana that played in la Sabana park, Not sure if they still exist. I also remember seeing an article in the Tico Times, maybe a year or so ago, that two Tico schools were fielding teams to play American football. |

Have seen Nerf footballs in a store once, but don't ever recall a real football. Think it was in Escazu somewhere but can't remember. Nerf is probably the best way to start anyway... |

Puravidatransport, I did tell her that her son should realize that playing football involving contact is miles different from psp or whatever. Did a search on google & found what ID was referring to, not sure if this league is still playing or not, but it seems that some people at least are open to the "other" football. |

A related question about sporting goods stores in CR. I want to get a medicine ball and large exercise ball after I move here because they're too damn big to ship. Do they even sell workout equipment like this in CR? |

For any other interested party, here's the homepage of the mighty, mighty Santa Ana Bulldogs (assuming their continued existence): http://www.santaanabulldogs.com/ I got this via a backdoor--a listing from TicoTimes of recreation and sporting stuff: http://www.ticotimes.com/recreation-sports/page-2.html |

There is an american football semi-pro league in Costa Rica... Think it is either 6 or 8 teams. There are advertisements on a regular basis on the radio station 105.9 and they do a segment during drive time every Friday interviewing different coaches and sponsors of the league. I was actually in Sportsman's lodge on Sunday afternoon watching a few NFL games and met one of the coaches.... appartently he lives in Cartago and comes to SL almost every Sunday to watch NFL games. I was sitting with Bill at the time and he politely excused himself as he saw the guy coming his direction and knew he was going to be hit up for sponsorship within a few seconds. |
