My plan was to retire at the end of my 60th year, and that’s where I’m at, but the company I work for is enticing me to stay for another year. So now I have some time to plan.
My divorce is final and I gave up everything (paid off house, all belongings, bank accounts) except my cloths and in return, she makes no claim to my pension or social security. My pension and SS will be just shy of 6K per month.
I don’t plan on going all in and completely moving to CR in the beginning, but I do plan on spending next winter (90 days) there. Then go from there.
I figured that I would get an apartment close to the gulch, I like the area around SL.
I Know I have time, but I’m a planner (it’s probably my OCD), but would appreciate some insight on a few things.
1) how much start up capitol should I figure on?
2) best guesstimate, how long should it take to find an apartment? Should this be done in
a separate trip and maybe have to pay a months extra rent?
3) are short term leases common for regular apartments?
4) from the guys that have done this, what would you have done differently?

Don't buy in CR for at a least a year.
By then you will know what you want - which might mean elsewhere.

I found this apartment a while back when I was considering escaping the US. It's near HLH and starts at $550/mo internet & utilities included with 3-month minimum located around Avenida 9 Calle 3. PM me for the add link if you want. I've also met some expats that live up the hill from LA and that seems like a better area to me and definitely worth checking out.
One of my friends down there has a hard time spending $1200/mo. Another spends about $2500/mo and lives in a really nice area of Escazu. Both spend a lot of time in the Gulch.

Or closer in, how about Panama? There's been a bit of talk here about how much better it is for retirees.The point being that all options should be examined before committing even psychologically to CR.

i appreciate the feedback.
i have thought about panama and also have been hearing about their retiree incentives and will definitely make a point of checking it out, but first will be CR because it's what i know, and then we'll see.
looking back i wonder where the time went, but now that i've made the dicission to retire, the weeks seem like months, i'm like a 4 year old waiting for santa.

If you have a farm that is autonomous, will see the animals, if animals are vet from time to time. And never a day off, they still need to be watered and fed, and their feathers clean and maintain. So when they die, and they are expected buried.

I have to say that to me the big draw in CR is the weather, having lived in Panama for 2 years and visited both LOS and PI, the damp, humid, hotness that turns a shirt into a wet rag in minutes is to be avoided at all costs, however, the ladies in LOS & PI are a lot more user friendly.
