I have been to the Panama Free Zone and found the value to be dubious for us gringos with access to the PX, but hell as far as I know, Panama has kind of turned into one big free zone, but was last in Golfito last when the zone was being built.

If so, would you mind giving us a short paragraph as to whether it is worth it to buy stuff if you live in CR, such as major appliances, TVs, car parts, etc.

Good site overall. Fine article on the new currency as well, explaining the security features, etc.

You can't get everything there. It's worth to drive to Golfito if you are looking for a dishwasher, stove or a tv. Liquor is very cheap, too!

This is the official site: http://depositodegolfito.com/dlcg/

For something like a TV, find a sale one in the States for under $500, and bring it as luggage, and take your $500 tax exemption. Buy eight bottles at the Duty Free store in the Baggage area of Juan santamaria. You have to spend a night in Golfito, if you buy a large item, hire someone to deliver it, and the expenses of traveling to Golfito. Just to save on the taxes.

This most definitely calls for a cost-benefit analysis. It's a better deal IF you were planning on a day's fishing anyway or maybe a stopover on your way back from Panama on the 3-days-out-of-country thingie.
