Minimum Wage In Costa Rica To Rise 2.63% On January
Minimum wage in Costa Rica will increase on January 1, 2011, but not the amount sought by labour unions. The ministerio de Trabajo announced on Thursday that minimum wages for the private sector will increase 2.63% for the first half of 2011.
The unions has sought an increase of 7%, the amount needed to fight inflation.
However, the government said no, setting the lower amount as being a reasonable level in order not to lose the stimulus for more jobs.
Sandra Piszk, the ministra de Trabajo, explained that the government considered factors like loss in purchasing power and the possibility of job losses if the employers are burdened with too high wages.
Costa Rica's minimum wages are based on skill and education levels.
The current minimum wage for an unskilled worker, for example is ¢7.200 (us$14.25) per day.
Wages are reviewed twice a year and any changes take effect on January 1 and July 1 of the year. The minimum wage was last raised on July 1, 2010, when the some 1.5 million workers received a 3.1% raise.
Public sector wages are negotiated separately between the government and workers unions.
