Since they say CR is famous for medical tourism I thought I'd have my eyes checked while I was down there next month. In searching the boards here at CRT nothing came up on eye doctors, eye exams, optometrists - you get the picture  (pun intended.) Can anyone recommend a competent (licensed (?)) optometrist in the barrio Amon area or nearby?

Any Opticas Vision location will do. It's a chain of optometry offices. They are everywhere, there's about 2 or 3 on Avenida Central. I don't think there are any in Barrio Amon. There's really nothing in Barrio Amon, except hotels and INS building. You have to go to centro for everything. The eye exams cost anywhere from 3,000-5,000 (less than $10). I always get my eyes checked there and get a written prescription and buy contact lenses online in the US. The computerized eye scanner and other machinery is identical to what they have in the states (where an exam costs me $75-100  ). BTW-contact lenses are expensive in CR, but glasses are pretty cheap.

I had a nasty eye infection (pink eye may be going around DR) last week and discovered Dr Roberto Velazquez, Specialist in Cornea Surgery, glaucoma, laser surgery, cataracts etc.

His clinic is first class! He speaks great English and is extremely knowlegeable. There are 3 other Doctors working with him. He insisted on seeing me every day for 7-8 days and had one of his associates exam me a couple of times when he was in surgery.

This is a "best of the best" in any country. I think they are equal to the finest Eye Clinic's in the US and I'll bet prices arre much lower than US.

Turn right at Pop's in Curridabat (approx 2 kilometers east of Jazz Cafe) and it's the second building on the right.
