Where would an investor look for opportunities in CR these days?

The main challenge is you will be competing and dealing with jealous ticos and their system of doing things or not doing things.

If you cant make money investing in the USA then you are probably doomed here.

OTOH. TGI Fridays and Dennys are breaking the bank here in Sales. Mostly tico patrons paying double what it cost to eat there than it does in the USA. But I don't see their bottom line so... I think a Dave & Busters or a Chuck E Cheese (type place) could work here if the it had the right management .

My question is/was to own a business (retail, manufacturing, or service) doesn't 51% have to be owned by a resident or citizen of Costa Rica?

Can the resident or citizen qualifier be a CR corporation?

There is no requirement in CR for a Tico or a resident to own a portion of a business owned by a foreigner. There is no restriction on a foreigner owning any type of real estate other then the restrictions imposed on everyone in the maritime zone.

The restriction that comes into play for those not being a citizen or a permanent resident is the restriction of actively working in the business you own.

Active or passive investments? Personally, if I had some investable money, I'd find one or more of the successful CR entrepreneurs from CRT, do due diligence and then buy their debt (commercial paper, etc.)--no equity wanted; it might hamper him/them, and I want no burden of ownership.

Consider buyuing a few apartments then letting Century 21 or others handle the day-to-day management. I'd look at tico-type apartments, not gringo-type apartments, dsay near Mall SP or one of the better barrios near city center or neat the university. That investment will be a lot less than one in say, escazu or santa ana.
