Do they have DVR’s in CR like Tivo or do you have a homemade Tivo solution that works in CR?

Well, Amnet and Cable Tica both have DVR's. I know AMNET charges $10 a month to rent one. But they are limited in their recording time.

MythTV is generally one of the best "build it yourself" devices, but it can be tough to build and get working correctly. Also, i'm not sure about getting guide data for Costa Rica, so that could put a kabosh on it.

Also, guide data in CR is sketchy at best.. it's often wrong, or simply lists "various programming" so it can be hard to fully utilize the DVR.

I've done some research, and getting guide data for a built-it yourself Tivo is pretty difficult. Even if you want to pay for the service, there isn't anyone that offers it. TV Guide has the data, and supposedly there are some ways to screen scape it, but it's not reliable and you'll probably spend more time dinking with it than getting shows to record.

I'd just go with the DVR the cable company offers.

I have been investigating too for future reference. I’m a big Tivo (original) fan, got three of them at home networked together. So far two of the most plausible options for me are;

1 – Tivo – use only on Manual Recording for TV shows. Download bittorrent movies and shows and upload them to the Tivo.
2 – Hauppauge - WinTV-PVR-350 with D-link DSM-520 media player

MG – I hate cable DVR’s. Too proprietary and you cannot add/remove features as you see fit.

I was always a Tivo fan, too. I have a couple of boxes and paid the lifetime fee. The problem was that it really distorted my HD channels. And the pic was better on the cable company DVR. I do agree that the format of Tivo is the best.

PURA VIDA!

Tivo now has an HD Tivo, however it only works with Cable companies (not Satellite) and only those that support CableCARD's and ATSC (over the air).

The problem is that the embedded processors just aren't powerful enough to compress HD in real-time. And the digital services are encrypted, which is what the cablecard is used for.. to decrypt.

I agree, I don't like that cable company DVR's, but manual recordings defeat most of the point of the TiVo.
