Post subject:  US or CR choice for old farts

i read some posts where old farts not sure where to settle, and want to give my ideas. i considered CR for some time and visited twice. yes, chicks are plenty and legal.
but, does it make main consideration? No.
everything counts. CR is, basically, a shithole compare to USA and prices are mostly same.Food, housing, crime and cars the same.
Health care is cheaper in theory. Plus you need Spanish.
There is no shopping or cultural life comparable to US and capital is small, dirty and lousy.
now lets see south Florida where i am now. climate same. big metropolis with plenty of choices and you can buy 2beds condo for 30 grand in gated community and you are all set for rest of your life. and if you really need chick ticket to CR cost 200$ round trip.

CR is a shit hole? well I beg to differ
I like to get out of San Jose and visit the nice people with no culture
I think it may take more than 2 trips to decide if living in CR is for you
I have been pondering the idea for 6 years
But I would rather live in CR and travel back to the USA for things I miss

You should probably be content to stay in Florida in the $30K 2br condo you refer to. Most of the guys on this site are a bit more adventurous and really like CR even if it has some warts just like any other place.

It's also true that San Jose is nothing special, but the countryside is quite diverse and beautiful, and most ticos are friendly folks.

PS. The women who frequent the pools at those gated retirement communities are really hot

Welcome to CRT

You can have the best of both worlds....rent in both the U.S. and Costa Rica. Stay a few months here and then a few months down there. After a one month trip in Costa Rica, I'm ready to return to the four seasons and all the other good things here in the northeast U.S., 8) but after five months up here, I'm ready to go back to Costa Rica for a month. 8)

it sounds like your two visits were either confined to the gulch chasing women or perhaps included a short side trip to some tourist destination.

San Jose has more culture then almost any city of comparable size in the United States. When you were visiting did you attend a performances by The National Symphony Orchestra, The National Youth Symphony, The National Choir or the National Dance Company? Attend any performances of the National Theater Group or the Little Theater Group? Perhaps you missed visiting The Art Museum, The Jade Museum, The Gold Museum or the Museum of Art and Contemporary Design. Did you attend any of the film festivals or showing of International movies at the Sala Garbo Theater? Did you even attend one of the many ferias de agricultura to see some basic Tico culture?

I would almost bet you not only did not attend any of those you did not even bother to find out if they existed.

I know some events like the pageantry of Semana Santa, the Festival de Luz, Tope, etc. are only available at certain times of the year so not knowing when you were here I won't include them.

Shopping? The pits in downtown but go out to Multi Plaza in Escazu and you will find the same upscale shops you find in the average South Florida mall.

All in all I think you should abandon any idea of moving to CR. You would not last six months given your current attitude about the country. I do not mean that in a mean spirited way it just seems you are not ready to live in a "third world" country.

Wow, I have got to get out of the Gulch. After 15+ trips no one ever mentioned these places when I was there. Then again, I never searched for anything but pu*sy. It's always nice to drift off the beaten path once in a while.

USwam, the condo that you can buy for 30 grand in South Florida with 2 beds, does that include the ladder to the tree house? :?:

Probably no ladder, Liberty City has high crime rates.

Another plus for San Jose, though some might not think of it as 'culture,' but on my last trip I had the pleasure of accompanying my favorita and her twins to the Parque Diversiones in La Uruca. I was prepared to be underwhelmed, but was pleasantly surprised.

The entry fee for 5 of us was 20,000, which allowed us to ride all the rides all we wanted, and included 30 tokens for the arcade. The park was spotless, the lines weren't at all oppresive, and the rides were modern and appeared in good repair. The layout was impressive and the mood at the place was very happy and uplifting. Food was all around and the selection was excellent. Also, I have never seen quite as many gorgeous young mothers as I did there.

All in all, quite a pleasant day and I would do this over a Six Flags in the US any day of the week. The only downside was that one of the twins screamed bloody murder when it was time to leave. Fortunately, he was asleep in the taxi within a kilometer. :D

Ciaociao

For a first post, this boychick came out with all guns blazing, didn't he? And yet got treated with civility and respect. Try that ploy on any other Board and see what you get...I may or may not be living someday in CR but sure won't disrespect it this way. Lord have mercy.

From AM Costa Rica:

Quote:
Nidia Rodríguez of Terra Nostra said that the country generates 4,500 tons of solid waste a day and that 30 percent of it ends up in streets, vacant lots, rivers and other public places.

Perhaps this is one of the criteria the original poster should have used in arriving at his conclusion. I know for sure that it was one of things I objected to about Costa Rica.

If the estimate is correct, the annual total would be 492,000+ tons per year?????

So, those of you who resent his statement that CR is a sh*t hole might have a harder time arguing that it's a not a "dump."

I did not resent his comments as you put it. I pointed out that his comment regarding the lack of culture and shopping was, in my opinion, not only off the mark but reflected a lack of investigation on his part. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion as to the pro and con of living in any country and others are free to disagree.

At best 2.5 world

I love CR but I do enjoy My home in NH
South Florida in July
I would like to hear from the poster?
